COMMINICATING HOPE AND TRUST IN OUR TIME - Comunicar esperanza y confianza en nuestros tiempos - Hoffnung und Zuversicht verbreiten in unserer Zeit - Communiquer l'espérance et la confiance en notre temps - Comunicare speranza e fiducia nel nostro tempo

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
FOR THE 51st WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY

........ I would like  to contribute to the search for an open and creative style of communication that never seeks to glamourize evil but instead to concentrate on solutions and to inspire a positive and responsible approach on the part of its recipients. I ask everyone to offer the people of our time storylines that are at heart “good news”.......

PHILIPPINES. Priest and churchgoers taken hostage by extremists: officials

Mindanao:
Churchgoers 'taken hostage' amid Marawi siege

A priest and several churchgoers have been taken hostage by fighters in Marawi City, on the Philippine island of Mindanao, as thousands of residents fled ongoing unrest that prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the southern region.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said fighters had forced their way into the Marawi Cathedral and seized a priest, 10 worshippers and three church workers.
"They have threatened to kill the hostages if the government forces unleashed against them are not recalled," Villegas said in a statement.
"[The priest] was not a combatant. He was not bearing arms. He was a threat to none. His capture and that of his companions violates every norm of civilised conflict," he added.
The husband of a woman being held hostage said he was worried about his wife, a secretary at the cathedral, because she does not have her medicines for a heart problem.
"I hope they free them, including Father Chito and my wife and their companions, because they are innocent," Jaime Mayormita told Manila's DZMM radio.
The man said when he last called his wife, someone else answered her phone, telling him to ask the military not to go near the area.
Mayormita added he had not been able to contact his wife since then.
Officials were not available for comment on the report of hostage-taking.

SEXUALLY LIBERATED (almost)

The essay by Therese Hargot,
lay observatory on affectivity (not completely) lost.

At the base, there is the question: What have we made of sexual liberation conquered in the sixties? This is the starting point of Therese Hargot, 33-year-old a Belgian sexologist, graduate in Philosophy and specialized in Social Sciences at the Sorbonne, in the investigation that led to the book “Youth Sexually Liberated (or Almost)”—the first book published in Italy by the therapist, who lives and teaches in Paris, where she shocked France with her essay. What emerged is a depiction, in some ways dramatic but real, of the sexuality of adults and especially of young people.
The Therese Hargot Tour made a stop in Rome on Women’s Day, and her book was presented in the Largo di Torre Argentina, in the presence of the Catholic journalist Constance Miriano and Alessandra Di Pietro, who calls herself “a journalist, feminist and biophilic.” The dialogue between these three women bore on the most diverse topics, from contraception to the pink quota, as well as on pornography and precocious sexuality to achieve gender equality, a mirage, also and above all in a period of apparent freedom for women. “In fact—said Hargot, whose point of view is purely secular—the revolution that supposedly took place thirty years ago led to obedience to another, in which women remain slaves.” Starting with the much-heralded hormonal contraception: “In the name of what should we take the risk of cardiovascular disease by introducing into our body a pill that is, among other things, also harmful to the environment, since it derives from processes of synthesis made in a lab?” Moreover, hormonal contraception and the resulting possibility to “program” motherhood have profoundly changed the psychological attitude of women toward pregnancy, so much so that “choosing to have a child implies expecting children to be perfect and mothers flawless. You could have had an abortion but you kept it, and so it’s your duty to be a good mother. You cannot say you’re tired, or that it is hard. If your child has a problem, the problem is yours, because you could have chosen not to bring it into the world; but you did want it. So, does contraception respond to the desires of today’s women? I think alternatives are needed.”

TOWARDS A PARTICIPATORY SOCIETY: NEW ROADS TO SOCIAL AND CULTURAL INTEGRATION

THE PONTIFICAL ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

Plenary Session 28 April-2 May 2017 – Since the beginning of his Pontificate, Pope Francis has asked our Academy to give more attention to the poor, the marginalized, the sick, the suffering, and to make a renewed commitment to fight all forms of social marginalization and exclusion. This Plenary will respond to his call by seeking to deepen our understanding and explanation of the reasons for social exclusion and, above all, to suggest practicable steps for promoting a thorough-going social and cultural integration, which we have termed the ‘participatory society’. Unlike other meetings that are focused on particular problems, this Plenary will address the topic from the broadest vantage point, emphasizing new ways to promote the full participation of people in society, meaning participation in all spheres of civil and political society.
The aim is not only to make the current structure of societies more participatory, but also to outline the characteristics of a participatory society capable of promoting the dignity of the human person in a context oriented to the common good and based on the principles of subsidiarity and solidarity. One aspect has to do with dissatisfaction with existing ideas for progressive social transformation that are incapable of avoiding recurring processes of exclusion and marginalization of entire populations, generations and social groups on a world scale. The other aspect is the need to develop a genuine concept of participation in social life and highlight the best practices that can lead the society toward a good life for all in the different realms: in the economy, in the political institutions, in the cultural dynamics that are now heavily influenced by the spread of information and communication technologies.

Through such research, we do not pretend to be elaborating a new empirical model of participatory society. Instead, our aim is rather to highlight the structural elements that would enable any given social system to develop into a more participatory .....
