MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS 
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE  51st WORLD DAY OF PEACE

Migrants and refugees: 
men and women in search of peace
1. Heartfelt good wishes for peace
Peace to all people and to all nations on earth! Peace, which the angels proclaimed to the shepherds on Christmas night,[1] is a profound aspiration for everyone, for each individual and all peoples, and especially for those who most keenly suffer its absence. Among these whom I constantly keep in my thoughts and prayers, I would once again mention the over 250 million migrants worldwide, of whom 22.5 million are refugees. Pope Benedict XVI, my beloved predecessor, spoke of them as “men and women, children, young and elderly people, who are searching for somewhere to live in peace.”[2] In order to find that peace, they are willing to risk their lives on a journey that is often long and perilous, to endure hardships and suffering, and to encounter fences and walls built to keep them far from their goal.
In a spirit of compassion, let us embrace all those fleeing from war and hunger, or forced by discrimination, persecution, poverty and environmental degradation to leave their homelands.
We know that it is not enough to open our hearts to the suffering of others. Much more remains to be done before our brothers and sisters can once again live peacefully in a safe home. Welcoming others requires concrete commitment, a network of assistance and goodwill, vigilant and sympathetic attention, the responsible management of new and complex situations that at times compound numerous existing problems, to say nothing of resources, which are always limited. By practising the virtue of prudence, government leaders should take practical measures to welcome, promote, protect, integrate and, “within the limits allowed by a correct understanding of the common good, to permit [them] to become part of a new society.”[3] Leaders have a clear responsibility towards their own communities, whose legitimate rights and harmonious development they must ensure, lest they become like the rash builder who miscalculated and failed to complete the tower he had begun to construct.[4]

La testimonianza é una delle peculiarità degli atteggiamenti cristiani. Un cristiano che porta questa luce, deve farla vedere perché lui è un testimone di Gesù Cristo, Luce di Dio. E deve mettere quella luce sul candelabro della sua vita”.
 “The mystery of God is light. This is one of the traits of Christian who has received the light in Baptism and must give it. That is, a Christian is a witness. Bearing witness. One of the peculiarities of Christian behavior. A Christian who bears this light must show it because he is a witness.”

A côté de la catéchèse, des célébrations et de la préparation aux sacrements, se situe une proposition qui devrait être faite à tous les élèves : l’Enseignement religieux.

La Religion, un enseignement
            En parlant d’enseignement, nous rappelons que la religion a toute sa place au côté des autres matières. Dans nos établissements catholiques, nous voulons une formation intégrale qui s’adresse à une personne qui ne soit pas simplement une tête à remplir ou un corps à développer, mais aussi un cœur à fortifier. Il s’agit bien d’un enseignement avec un contenu. Celui-ci rend compte du Christ à travers l’Ecriture Sainte et la vie de l’Eglise. L’Ecriture et la Tradition de l’Eglise ensemble rendent compte du Christ qui, par sa venue en notre chair, révèle le prix inestimable de chaque être humain et qui, par sa mort et sa résurrection, offre une espérance inébranlable en la victoire de la vie sur le mal et la mort.

L’Enseignement religieux a un contenu mais aussi une pédagogie propre, celle du dialogue respectueux dans la classe et de la découverte de l’intériorité, lieu des choix personnels et du dialogue avec Dieu.


L’Enseignement religieux, un droit pour tous les élèves et un devoir pour les enseignants
Dans l’école catholique, l’élève qui est chrétien doit pouvoir fortifier son attachement au Christ et à l’Eglise et celui qui est d’une autre tradition doit pouvoir accéder à une vision juste de la foi chrétienne. Et le professeur, catholique ou non, doit pouvoir aborder la religion avec le même sérieux que les autres matières. Il est vrai que l’enseignement de la foi chrétienne touche les convictions et les questions existentielles, celles du sens et des choix de la vie. Cet enseignement ne peut pas laisser le professeur indifférent. Malgré cela, un professeur en recherche ou en questionnement, peut rendre compte, avec loyauté et compétence, de l’enseignement du Christ et de l’Histoire de l’Eglise. ...

HOLOCAUST, A WAY FROM DARKNESS INTO THE LIGHT



 An experience of UMEC/WUCT educators

at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem



“In our time, when day by day mankind is being drawn closer together, and the ties between different peoples are becoming stronger, the Church examines more closely her relationship to non-Christian religions. In her task of promoting unity and love among men, indeed among nations, she considers above all in this declaration men have in common and what draws them to fellowship (Nostra Aetate 1). God holds the Jews most dear for the sake of their Fathers […] Since the spiritual patrimony common to Christians and Jews is thus so great, this sacred synod wants to foster and recommend that mutual understanding and respect which is the fruit, above all, of biblical and theological studies as well as of fraternal dialogues” (Nostra Aetate 4).
            In the spirit of this brotherly dialogue, from the 8 till the 14 December, a delegation of  World Union of Catholic Teachers (UMEC-WUCT) led by Mr Guy Bourdeaud'hui (president UMEC-WUCT) and made up of Mrs Katie Addison (St. John Fisher Catholic college, Newcastle, UK – teacher), Mr Santino Cerami  (Primary school, E. De Amicis, Palermo - IT – coordinating teacher), Mrs Concetta Fascella (Secondary school, E. Medi, Palermo - IT – coordinating teacher), Mrs Caroline Healy (St Mary University, London, UK – teacher), Mrs Barbara Leggeri (College school Ovidio, Roma, IT – teacher), Mr Gerard Marciniak  (Xaverian College, Manchester - UK – teacher), Mr John Philip Nish (Wakefield City Academies Trust Wakefield – President CATCS, UK, Headteacher), Fr. Adrian-Vasile Podar (Iuliu Maniu High School, Oradea, Romania, teacher), Mrs Anna Torretta (College school Piaget-Majorana, Rome - IT-teacher), Mr Bert Verhaegen (Primary school, Heist-op-del-Berg, Belgium – teacher), and Mr Raf Joseph Waumans (Community of primary schools, Willruk -teacher, Belgium) took part in a Seminar at Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem, that was based on the study of the Holocaust....
