MESSAGE OF POPE LEO XIV

TO THE PARTICIPANTS IN THE INTERNATIONAL ENCOUNTER

FOR PEACE AND RECONCILIATION

AT LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO

I send cordial greetings to all who are participating in the International Encounter for Peace and Reconciliation taking place at Loyola University Chicago. I am pleased that you are continuing the work of the Building Bridges Initiative begun in 2022 with Pope Francis by bringing together university students, scholars and leaders who are promoting peace around the world. In a time increasingly marked by the wounds of war and violence, your efforts are sorely needed.

In this regard, there are several principles to keep in mind as you move forward with this noble initiative. First, true peace is not simply the absence of conflict, but rather is God’s gift. This peace is not like the kind that the world offers us (cf. Jn 14:27), which unfortunately is often imposed with violence and deception. Jesus tells us, as he told his apostles, not to be troubled or afraid (cf. ibid.), for he is with us always, until the end of the age (cf. Mt 28:20). Christians are called today to be co-workers for peace with Christ, who even in our day wishes to share that gift with humanity. The Lord walks with us as we work to promote harmony in our families, in our local communities, in our respective countries and around the world.

Second, if we wish to promote concord on a global level, it is necessary to seek the engagement and commitment of the international community for the sake of the common good, which transcends borders, faith traditions and cultures. It likewise requires systematic interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together institutions, organizations, scientists and leaders in various fields to achieve this end. Your efforts at this meeting are a concrete example of how this is possible, and, I hope, will bear great fruit.

Third, true harmony is rooted in the reconciliation that God has brought to us through his only Son, Jesus Christ, by his death and resurrection. Peace is a constant journey of reconciliation with God, with ourselves, with others and with creation (cf. Address in the Presence of Religious Leaders, 28 October 2025). In this spirit, we are called to foster a culture of reconciliation capable of overcoming the globalization of powerlessness, which tempts us to believe that an era free of conflict is unattainable (cf. ibid.). Moreover, we must remember that prayer is also a powerful force for reconciliation. When people of different religious traditions come together in prayer, it has the power to change the course of history.

J’adresse mes salutations les plus chaleureuses à tous les participants de la Rencontre internationale pour la paix et la réconciliation qui se tient à l’Université Loyola de Chicago. Je me réjouis que vous poursuiviez l’œuvre de l’Initiative « Construire des ponts », initiée en 2022 avec le pape François, en réunissant étudiants, chercheurs et responsables qui œuvrent pour la paix dans le monde entier. À une époque de plus en plus marquée par les blessures de la guerre et de la violence, vos efforts sont plus que jamais nécessaires.

À cet égard, voici quelques principes à garder à l’esprit pour la poursuite de cette noble initiative. Premièrement, la véritable paix n’est pas simplement l’absence de conflit, mais un don de Dieu. Cette paix est différente de celle que le monde nous propose (cf. Jn 14, 27), qui, malheureusement, est souvent imposée par la violence et la tromperie. Jésus nous dit, comme il l'a dit à ses apôtres, de ne pas nous troubler ni avoir peur (cf. ibid.), car il est avec nous tous les jours, jusqu'à la fin du monde (cf. Mt 28, 20). Les chrétiens sont appelés aujourd'hui à œuvrer pour la paix avec le Christ, qui, même de nos jours, désire partager ce don avec l'humanité. Le Seigneur marche avec nous tandis que nous nous efforçons de promouvoir l'harmonie dans nos familles, nos communautés locales, nos pays respectifs et partout dans le monde.

Deuxièmement, si nous voulons promouvoir la concorde à l'échelle mondiale, il est nécessaire de rechercher l'engagement de la communauté internationale pour le bien commun, qui transcende les frontières, les traditions religieuses et les cultures. Cela requiert également une collaboration interdisciplinaire systématique, réunissant institutions, organisations, scientifiques et responsables de divers domaines pour atteindre cet objectif. Vos efforts lors de cette rencontre en sont un exemple concret et, je l'espère, porteront de grands fruits.

Troisièmement, la véritable harmonie trouve sa source dans la réconciliation que Dieu nous a apportée par son Fils unique, Jésus-Christ, par sa mort et sa résurrection. La paix est un cheminement constant de réconciliation avec Dieu, avec nous-mêmes, avec les autres et avec la création (cf. Discours en présence des chefs religieux, 28 octobre 2025). Dans cet esprit, nous sommes appelés à promouvoir une culture de la réconciliation capable de surmonter la mondialisation de l’impuissance, qui nous pousse à croire qu’une ère sans conflit est inaccessible (cf. ibid.). De plus, n’oublions pas que la prière est aussi une puissante force de réconciliation. Lorsque des personnes de différentes traditions religieuses s’unissent dans la prière, elle a le pouvoir de changer le cours de l’histoire.

Invio cordiali saluti a tutti coloro che partecipano all'Incontro Internazionale per la Pace e la Riconciliazione che si svolge presso la Loyola University di Chicago. Sono lieto che stiate proseguendo il lavoro dell'iniziativa "Building Bridges", iniziata nel 2022 con Papa Francesco, riunendo studenti universitari, studiosi e leader che promuovono la pace in tutto il mondo. In un tempo sempre più segnato dalle ferite della guerra e della violenza, i vostri sforzi sono estremamente necessari.

A questo proposito, ci sono diversi principi da tenere a mente mentre portate avanti questa nobile iniziativa. In primo luogo, la vera pace non è semplicemente l'assenza di conflitto, ma piuttosto un dono di Dio. Questa pace non è come quella che il mondo ci offre (cfr Gv 14,27), che purtroppo viene spesso imposta con violenza e inganno. Gesù ci dice, come disse ai suoi apostoli, di non turbarci e di non avere paura (cfr. ibid.), perché Egli è con noi tutti i giorni, fino alla fine del mondo (cfr. Mt 28,20). I cristiani sono chiamati oggi a essere collaboratori della pace con Cristo, che anche ai nostri giorni desidera condividere questo dono con l'umanità. Il Signore cammina con noi mentre ci impegniamo a promuovere l'armonia nelle nostre famiglie, nelle nostre comunità locali, nei nostri rispettivi Paesi e in tutto il mondo.

In secondo luogo, se desideriamo promuovere la concordia a livello globale, è necessario ricercare l'impegno e la collaborazione della comunità internazionale per il bene comune, che trascende confini, tradizioni di fede e culture. Ciò richiede anche una sistematica collaborazione interdisciplinare, che riunisca istituzioni, organizzazioni, scienziati e leader in vari campi per raggiungere questo obiettivo. I vostri sforzi in questo incontro sono un esempio concreto di come ciò sia possibile e, spero, porteranno grandi frutti. In terzo luogo, la vera armonia è radicata nella riconciliazione che Dio ci ha portato attraverso il suo unico Figlio, Gesù Cristo, con la sua morte e risurrezione. La pace è un cammino costante di riconciliazione con Dio, con noi stessi, con gli altri e con il creato (cfr Discorso alla presenza dei leader religiosi, 28 ottobre 2025). In questo spirito, siamo chiamati a promuovere una cultura di riconciliazione capace di superare la globalizzazione dell'impotenza, che ci induce a credere che un'era libera dai conflitti sia irraggiungibile (cfr ibid.). Inoltre, dobbiamo ricordare che la preghiera è anche una forza potente per la riconciliazione. Quando persone di diverse tradizioni religiose si uniscono in preghiera, ciò ha il potere di cambiare il corso della storia.

 

MENSAJE DEL PAPA LEÓN XIV  A LOS PARTICIPANTES EN EL ENCUENTRO INTERNACIONAL POR LA PAZ Y LA RECONCILIACIÓN EN LA UNIVERSIDAD LOYOLA DE CHICAGO

Envío un cordial saludo a todos los participantes en el Encuentro Internacional por la Paz y la Reconciliación que se celebra en la Universidad Loyola de Chicago. Me complace que continúen la labor de la Iniciativa Construyendo Puentes, iniciada en 2022 con el Papa Francisco, reuniendo a estudiantes universitarios, académicos y líderes que promueven la paz en todo el mundo. En una época cada vez más marcada por las heridas de la guerra y la violencia, sus esfuerzos son sumamente necesarios.

En este sentido, hay varios principios que deben tener presentes al avanzar en esta noble iniciativa. En primer lugar, la verdadera paz no es simplemente la ausencia de conflicto, sino un don de Dios. Esta paz no es como la que nos ofrece el mundo (cf. Jn 14,27), que lamentablemente a menudo se impone con violencia y engaño. Jesús nos dice, como a sus apóstoles, que no nos turbemos ni tengamos miedo (cf. ibíd.), porque él está con nosotros siempre, hasta el fin del mundo (cf. Mt 28,20). Los cristianos estamos llamados hoy a ser colaboradores de Cristo por la paz, quien incluso en nuestros días desea compartir ese don con la humanidad. El Señor nos acompaña en nuestro trabajo por promover la armonía en nuestras familias, en nuestras comunidades locales, en nuestros respectivos países y en todo el mundo.

En segundo lugar, si deseamos promover la concordia a nivel global, es necesario buscar la participación y el compromiso de la comunidad internacional en aras del bien común, que trasciende fronteras, tradiciones religiosas y culturas. Asimismo, requiere una colaboración interdisciplinaria sistemática, que reúna a instituciones, organizaciones, científicos y líderes de diversos campos para lograr este fin. Sus esfuerzos en esta reunión son un ejemplo concreto de cómo esto es posible y, espero, darán grandes frutos.

En tercer lugar, la verdadera armonía tiene sus raíces en la reconciliación que Dios nos ha traído a través de su Hijo único, Jesucristo, mediante su muerte y resurrección. La paz es un camino constante de reconciliación con Dios, con nosotros mismos, con los demás y con la creación (cf. Discurso ante los líderes religiosos, 28 de octubre de 2025). Con este espíritu, estamos llamados a fomentar una cultura de reconciliación capaz de superar la globalización de la impotencia, que nos tienta a creer que una era libre de conflictos es inalcanzable (cf. ibíd.). Además, debemos recordar que la oración también es una poderosa fuerza de reconciliación. Cuando personas de diferentes tradiciones religiosas se unen en oración, tiene el poder de cambiar el curso de la historia.

SOUTH SUDAN - MASSACRE OF INNOCENTS

 

South Sudan: 

The strong condemnation of the Bishops following massacre in Jonglei State

Members of the Sudan and South Sudan Catholic Bishops' Conference (SSSCBC) have strongly condemned what some UN agencies have described as yet another massacre of innocent civilians in South Sudan’s Jonglei State

“We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, these heinous and senseless killings. There can be no justification whatsoever for the murder of innocent civilians. Such acts are an offence against God, the Author of Life, and a grave sin against humanity. We stand in unwavering solidarity with our suffering people in Ayod and Abiemnhom, who have once again been plunged into mourning, fear, and displacement,” the Bishops said.

According Church sources in the region, at least 169 people were killed in what has been described as “intercommunal violence that is politically motivated.” The number of those who have died is expected to rise among those with serious injuries. Vatican News has learned that most of the people in Abiemnhom have been evacuated to the town of Abyei.

Revenge is not justice

The Bishops’ Statement released to the media on Tuesday, 4 March, is signed by all members of the Bishops’ Conference. The prelates say they are profoundly appalled and saddened by the deeply alarming and “persistent cruelty of violence.”

“We have received distressing reports of the brutal targeting and killing of innocent civilians in Ayod County of Jonglei State and Abiemnhom County in the Ruweng Administrative Area. These acts represent not only a tragic loss of life but a fresh descent into the abyss of human depravity, where the sanctity of life, a sacred gift from God, is trampled upon with alarming impunity.”

The Bishops add, “The culture of deadly revenge has taken deep root in parts of our society. Cycles of retaliation, fuelled by anger, collective blame, and historical grievances, continue to destroy families, weaken communities, and rob our children of their future. Revenge is not justice. Collective punishment is not strength. Blood for blood is not dignity. This mentality must end,” affirm the Bishops.

Appeal to South Sudan’s leaders

The violence comes amid growing political instability in South Sudan. Clashes between the South Sudan People's Defence Force (SSPDF) and the Sudan People's Liberation Army-In-Opposition (SPLA-IO) in parts of Jonglei have sadly become frequent.

“To the transitional governments at all levels, we address a fervent and urgent appeal: You are the custodians of the common good, entrusted with the sacred duty to protect life. We call upon you to act immediately, decisively, and transparently,” the Bishops’ Statement reads.

In the particular cases of the recent killings in Ayod and Abiemnhom, the Bishops have called for a thorough and independent investigation that should lead to the identification and prosecution of perpetrators.

WUCT-UMEC TOWARD THE FUTURE

The Executive Committee of the World Union of Catholic Teachers (UMEC-WUCT), with the participation of regional representatives, and the UNESCO representative, has concluded its work for the traditional Review and Planning Meeting in Cambrai (Haute-de-France), organized by the Ecclesiastical Assistant, Archbishop Dollmann of Cambrai.

The three days were dedicated to intensive work. The activities of the previous year were reviewed, including the World Education Jubilee.

The main activities planned for 2026 are: the conference in Romania, organized in collaboration with the Diocese of Oradea (May 24-28), on current educational challenges; and the conference in Africa on the continent's main educational issues. In addition, preparations have begun for the quadrennial congress for the renewal of the Union's governing bodies (to be held in Rome in early December), which, as is tradition, will be closed by the Pope. Part of the meeting was dedicated to the Union's organizational aspects, as well as current socio-educational issues.

The Committee expressed its deep concern about the violence, massacres, and wars that ravage and humiliate various regions of the world, leaving millions of victims of violence and hunger.

Furthermore, it is concerned about media abuses, the lack of respect for life, and the egocentrism that characterize many situations. Education for cooperation and peace, for respect for people and the environment, is urgently needed to guarantee a comprehensive education for all! It is also urgent to revitalize the value of education and professionalism within associations.

UMEC-WUCT will do everything possible to help teachers improve the quality of the service they provide, often under great difficulty. Their commitment is not always adequately recognized.

The recent messages of Pope Francis offer timely reflections and advice for all educators. The invitation is to "forge new paths," to be "pilgrims of hope" and "promoters of dignity, justice, and trust." Always urgent and timely!

 Participants come from Belgium, Chile, France, Italy, Romania, and the United Kingdom.

  

WUCT-UMEC HACIA EL FUTURO

El Comité Ejecutivo de la Unión Mundial de Profesores Católicos, con la participación de representantes regionales y el representante de la UNESCO, ha finalizado los trabajos para la tradicional Reunión de Revisión y Planificación en Cambrai (Alta Francia  ), en la residencia del Arzobispo, Monseñor Dollmann, asistente eclesiástico de la Unión.   Los tres días se han dedicado a un trabajo intensivo. Se revisaron las actividades del año anterior, incluido el Jubileo de la Educación Mundial.

Las principales actividades previstas para 2026 son: la conferencia en Rumanía, organizada en colaboración con la Diócesis de Oradea (del 24 al 28 de mayo), sobre los desafíos educativos actuales; y la conferencia en África sobre los principales problemas educativos del continente. Además, han comenzado los preparativos para el congreso cuatrienal de renovación de los órganos de gobierno de la Unión (que se celebrará en Roma a principios de diciembre), que, como es tradición, será clausurado por el Papa. Parte de la reunión se dedicó a los aspectos organizativos de la Unión, así como a la problemática socioeducativa actual.

El Comité expresó su profunda preocupación por la violencia, las masacres y las guerras que asolan y humillan diversas regiones del mundo, dejando a millones de víctimas de la violencia y el hambre.

Además, le preocupan los abusos mediáticos, la falta de respeto por la vida y el egocentrismo que caracterizan muchas situaciones. ¡La educación para la cooperación y la paz, para el respeto a las personas y al medio ambiente, es urgente para garantizar una educación integral para todos! También es urgente revitalizar el valor de la educación y la profesionalidad dentro de las asociaciones.

UMEC-WUCT hará todo lo posible para ayudar al profesorado a mejorar la calidad del servicio que presta, a menudo con gran dificultad. Su compromiso no siempre se reconoce adecuadamente.

Los recientes mensajes del Papa Francisco ofrecen reflexiones y consejos oportunos para todos los educadores. La invitación es a "forjar nuevos caminos", a ser "peregrinos de esperanza" y "promotores de dignidad, justicia y confianza". ¡Siempre urgente y oportuno!

UMEC-WUCT ENVERS LE FUTUR

Le Comité Exécutif de l'Union Mondiale des Professeurs Catholiques, avec la participation des représentants régionaux et du représentant de l'UNESCO, a finalisé les travaux pour la traditionnelle Réunion de Révision et de Planification à Cambrai (Haute-Francie), à la résidence de l'archevêque, Monseigneur Dollmann, assistant ecclésiastique de l'Union Les trois jours ont été consacrés à un travail intensif. Ils on revisé les activités de l’année précédente, y compris le Jubilé de l’Éducation Mondiale.

Les principales activités prévues pour 2026 sont : la conférence en Roumanie, organisée en collaboration avec le diocèse d'Oradea (du 24 au 28 mai), sur les défis éducatifs actuels ; et la conférence en Afrique sur les principaux problèmes éducatifs du continent. En outre, ils ont commencé les préparatifs pour le congrès culturel de rénovation des organes gouvernementaux de l'Union (qui se célébrera à Rome en principe en décembre), qui, comme la tradition, sera clausuré par le Pape. Une partie de la réunion a étè consacrée aux aspects organisationnels de l'Union, ainsi qu'à la problématique socio-éducative actuelle. Le Comité a exprimé sa profonde préoccupation pour la violence, les massacres, et les guerres qui assolaient et humiliaient diverses régions du monde, déclenchant des millions de victimes de la violence et de la vie.

De plus, les abus médiatiques sont préoccupants, le manque de respect pour la vie et l'égocentrisme qui caractérise de nombreuses personnes et institutions. L'éducation pour la coopération et la paix, pour le respect des personnes et du milieu ambiant, est urgente pour garantir une éducation intégrale pour tous ! Il est également urgent de revitaliser la valeur de l’éducation et de la professionnalité au sein des associations.

L'UMEC-WUCT faira tout ce qui est possible pour aider les enseignants à améliorer la qualité du service offert, à un menu très difficile. Malheuresent le travail des enseignants n’est toujours pas reconnu de manière adéquate.

Les messages récents du Pape proposent des réflexions et des opportunités de conseils pour tous les éducateurs. L'invitation est un "chercher nouvelles chemins", etre "peregrins d’espoir" et des "promoteurs de dignité, de justice et de confiance". L’engagement de tous est urgent et nécessaire.

Les participants se déroulent en Belgique, au Chili,  en France, en Italie, en Philippines, en Roumanie et au Royaume-Uni.

L’UMEC-WUCT VERSO IL DOMANI

Il Comitato Esecutivo dell'Unione Mondiale degli Insegnanti Cattolici (UMEC-WUCT), con la partecipazione dei rappresentanti regionali e del rappresentante dell'UNESCO, ha svolto i lavori del tradizionale incontro annuale di verifica e di progettazione a Cambrai (Alta Francia), presso la residenza dall'Assistente Ecclesiastico, l'Arcivescovo Dollmann di Cambrai.

Gli ultimi tre giorni sono stati dedicati a un intenso lavoro. Sono state riviste le attività dell'anno precedente, incluso il Giubileo Mondiale dell'Educazione.

Le principali attività previste per il 2026 sono: la conferenza in Romania, organizzata in collaborazione con la Diocesi di Oradea (24-28 maggio), sulle attuali sfide educative; e la conferenza in Africa sulle principali questioni educative del continente. Sono inoltre iniziati i preparativi per il congresso quadriennale per il rinnovo degli organi direttivi dell'Unione (che si terrà a Roma all'inizio di dicembre), che, come da tradizione, sarà concluso dal Papa. Una parte dell'incontro è stata dedicata agli aspetti organizzativi dell'Unione, nonché alle attuali problematiche socio-educative. Il Comitato ha espresso profonda preoccupazione per la violenza, i massacri e le guerre che devastano e umiliano diverse regioni del mondo, lasciando milioni di vittime di violenza e fame.

Inoltre, esprime preoccupazione per gli abusi mediatici, la mancanza di rispetto per la vita e l'egocentrismo che caratterizzano molte situazioni. L'educazione alla cooperazione e alla pace, al rispetto delle persone e dell'ambiente, è urgentemente necessaria per garantire un'istruzione completa per tutti! È inoltre urgente rivitalizzare il valore dell'istruzione e della professionalità all'interno delle associazioni.

L'UMEC-WUCT farà tutto il possibile per aiutare gli insegnanti a migliorare la qualità del servizio che offrono, spesso in grandi difficoltà. Il loro impegno non è sempre adeguatamente riconosciuto.

I recenti messaggi di Papa Francesco offrono riflessioni e consigli attuali per tutti gli educatori. L'invito è a "tracciare nuove strade", a essere "pellegrini di speranza" e "promotori di dignità, giustizia e fiducia". Sempre urgente e attuale!

 I partecipanti provengono da Belgio, Cile, Filippine, Francia, Italia, Romania e Regno Unito.
