Dear Friends, in your apostolate your rightly take into account that the art of educating must be constantly cultivated and nurtured, for it is not something acquired once and for all…Young people of one generation differ from those of the next. Educators, then must continually reassess their own motivations and their methods… Your task in this regard is to help teachers maintain their desire to grow together with their student, to find the most effective ways of transmitting the joy of learning and the desire for truth, by employing language and cultural forms suited to young people of today. (Pope Francis in his address to the UMEC-WUCT, 12 November 2022).
This most inspiring message resonates in the hearts of
educators who wish to weather surging tides of change and technological
revolutions. transformative education could help empower learners to see the
social world differently through an ethical lens. Critical pedagogy aims to
connect with learners’ personal and emotional experience, and engages these
experiences through dialogue that integrates different perspectives, including
affective knowledge. These efforts need a commitment to continually create a
more ethical society.
The various seminars and webinars conducted by the
Catholic Teachers’ Guild of the Philippines (CTGP), with almost two thousand
members from various schools dwelt on seamless learning and strategies that
work on integral education of the human participant in pursuit of truth guided
by reason and illuminated by faith, knowledge creation, integration,
dissemination and that work on integral education of the human participant in
pursuit of truth guided by reason and illuminated by faith, knowledge creation,
integration, dissemination and application of knowledge to form competent and
compassionate persons committed to serve the Church, the nation, and the global
community.
It is the statement of the University of Santo Tomas
(UST’s) Mission. Pontifical and Royal University. A research university,
faithful to her centuries-old tradition of excellence, envisions herself by
2030 as a leading Catholic institution of learning in Asia-Pacific, committed
to the integral formation of her stakeholders for social transformation.
Yesterday, January 28, 2023, we celebrated the Feast
of St. Thomas Aquinas, patron saint of the University and of other Catholic
Schools and Universities. The Angelic Doctor of the Church, whose canonization
jubilee we celebrated this year 2023, death jubilee in 2023, and birth
celebration in 2025.
Over a week ago, the Vice-Rector for Religious Affairs and yours truly had
mentioned over a working lunch the celebration of Thomas Aquinas’ birth in 2025
in collaboration with the UMEC-WUCT. Many possibilities in activities indeed

PHILIPPINES - THE POPE FRANCIS WRITINGS
Three Thomasian educators are among the contributors
of a collection of the writings of Pope Francis translated into Filipino that
was recently published by the Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc. with
permission from the Libreria Editrice Vaticana. They are Mr. Leo-Martin Angelo
R. Ocampo and Mr. Sir-Lien Hugh T. Tadeo of the Institute of Religion and Mr.
Vince Henry M. Salles of the Senior High School.
Titled “Ang Galak ng Ebanghelyo: Evangelii Gaudium at
Iba Pang Mahahalagang Akda ni Papa Francisco na Isinalin sa Wikang Filipino,”
the volume contains all of the most important texts of the Pope’s pontificate
thus far, from his first encyclical Lumen Fidei to his latest Apostolic Letter
Desiderio Desideravi.
CBCP President and Bishop of Kalookan Pablo Virgilio
David expressed his hope that the translations would help bring Filipino
readers closer to the thought, spirituality, and reflection of Pope Francis or
“Lolo Kiko” as we fondly call him. He also said that “Ang pagbasa sa mga ito ay
[translations] is like listening to him [speak] in our own language).”
Meanwhile, the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles
John Brown thanked Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc. “for this
noteworthy effort of making available the magisterium of Pope Francis in the
Filipino language, allowing more Filipinos to have access to the Pope’s
profound insights on the life and ministry of the Church today and in the
future.”
The volume is a contribution of the publisher to the
celebration of the fifth centenary of the coming of Christianity to the
Philippines and it also coincides with the seventh anniversary of Ocampo’s
translation of Laudato Si’, the first encyclical published in the local
language with permission from the Vatican Press.

PHILIPPINES - WEBINAR
WEBINAR CTGP
– Philippines – 27th August 2022
Distinguished colleagues and friends, thank you for the invitation and
congratulations on your generous work to the university and the association.
The Catholic Teachers' Guild of the Philippines, through the generous
commitment of its leaders and members, has always been a great resource for
UMEC-WUCT.
I would like to thank, also on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Assistant,
Archbishop Dollmann, and President Bourdeaud'hui, especially the President,
Professor Belen Tangco, with whom I have had the good opportunity to collaborative
for many years.
In the face of a rapidly changing world that confronts us with new and
unpredictable situations: pandemics, wars, major migrations, new poverty, the
crisis of democracies and values, the crisis of families, etc., our school and
university institutions put much therefore in finding the most appropriate
contents and strategies to respond adequately to the many educational
challenges. In fact, new visions, new paths, and appropriate pathways are
needed, especially to help the most fragile and guarantee the full quality of
education for all. The world needs values and quality more than quantity.
Education cannot stop at the occasional and contingent but must have horizons
open to the future and transcendence.
The papal project of the Global Compact on Education gives us appropriate
indications to give vitality to the educational path, to create educational
alliances suitable to foster the integral education of each person,
Our young generation, right from early childhood, are placed in new
environments and among novel communication tools, which they must learn to
master to avoid being over-whelmed and suffocated by the enormous flow of
frequent communication hurricanes.
Communicating, as we well know, means entering relationships, knowing how
to listen, knowing how to reflect, knowing how to discern, knowing how to
dialogue. It is, therefore, appropriate to improve the quality of
communication, so that it might lead to good, every form of communication
brings out the good, beautiful and true outcomes.
For this to happen, it is necessary to review and improve the quality of
teacher training and stimulate the ways of educating.
The UMEC-WUCT can and must be a space for growth and the meeting place
where everyone’s ideas bear fruit.
Cordial greetings and best wishes to all.

PHILIPPINES, ECOLOGIE INTEGRALE
plate-forme, l'organisation Living Laudato Si' Philippines,
universités catholiques, Living Laudato Si' Philippines propose

PHILIPPINES 500 YEARS OF CHRISTIANITY
celebrates
Mass
for 500 years
of Christianity
in Philippines
Pope Francis celebrates Mass to mark
the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines, and
urges Filipinos to renew their commitment to Christ as missionary disciples.
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis on Sunday joined the Church in the Philippines in commemorating 500 years of Christianity in the Southeast Asian nation. He celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica with several representatives of the Filipino Church, including Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, formerly the Archbishop of Manila.
Missionary disciples
In his homily, the Pope said Filipinos received the joy of the Gospel half a millennia ago, “and this joy is evident in your people.” “We see it in your eyes, on your faces, in your songs and in your prayers,” he said. “I want to thank you for the joy you bring to the whole world and to our Christian communities.”
Recognizing the witness of faith
Filipinos offer through their “discreet and hardworking presence”, Pope Francis
also urged them to “persevere in the work of evangelization.”
He said the Gospel message of God’s closeness must be constantly proclaimed to others, so that none might perish. As the Church in the Philippines celebrates the quincentenary of her birth, the Pope urged Filipino Catholics to walk courageously along the path of missionary discipleship.
“Never be afraid to proclaim the
Gospel, to serve and to love,” he said. “With your joy, you will help people to
say of the Church too: ‘she so loved the world!’”
Gift of faith - 500 years of
Christianity in the Philippines
Jesus is source of our joy
Turning his reflections to the Sunday
Gospel, Pope Francis pointed out that it contains the heart of the Gospel
message. “God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son” (Jn 3:16).
He added that the Gospel message is
not an idea or doctrine, but Jesus Himself.
“The source of our joy is not an
elegant theory about how to find happiness, but the actual experience of being
accompanied and loved throughout the journey of life.”
‘God gave’
The Holy Father then spoke about two
aspects of the day’s Gospel passage: “God so loved” and “God gave.”
Pope Francis said that “God so loved”
that He came to seek us out when we were lost and raise us up.
“He has always looked at us with
love, and for the sake of love, He came among us in the flesh of his Son,” said
the Pope. “In Jesus, God spoke the definitive word about our life: you are not
lost, you are loved. Loved forever.”
He added that sometimes we prefer a
“glum, sorrowful, and self-absorbed religiosity”, even though the Gospel should
“enlarge our hearts and make us grasp the immensity of God’s love.”
‘God gave’
Pope Francis then reflected on the action of God’s love: “God gave his Son” for our salvation. Love, noted the Pope, takes us out of ourselves, and always seeks to give itself fully. “That is the power of love,” he said, “it shatters the shell of our selfishness, breaks out of our carefully constructed security zones, tears down walls and overcomes fears, so as to give freely of itself.”
God’s love in Jesus, said Pope
Francis, is so great that “He cannot fail to give Himself to us.”
Joy in self-giving
As we see in people who love one another and share their lives in love, he said, “the more we love, the more we become capable of giving.” The Pope said that sometimes we seek joy in dreams of glory or in the false security of material possessions.
Yet, true joy can only be found in
complete self-giving, as God shows in giving His Son.
“Life teaches us that true joy comes
from realizing that we are loved gratuitously,” concluded Pope Francis,
“knowing that we are not alone, having someone who shares our dreams and who,
when we experience shipwreck, is there to help us and lead us to a safe
harbor.”
