BUDS OF HOPE

Think about the present of the school, which is the future of society, grappling with an epochal transformation. Think about the young teachers who are taking their first steps in school and the families who feel alone in their educational task. To each one, propose with humility and novelty your educational and associative style.

The new steps towards the world war between Israel and Iran and the barbarization of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza and the West Bank bring to mind two Latin mottos: the tragic but increasingly practiced mors tua, vita mea, and the more just but less practiced: vita tua, vita mea. The ideas, principles and institutions (the Constitutions, the UN and international law of human rights and humanitarian law) are increasingly considered historically outdated utopias. In this regard, two passages from the latest speeches of Pope Francis seemed enlightening to me, like a precious testament, of which I will quote a few sentences.

“When we still feel the weight of death in our hearts, when we see the shadows of evil continue their noisy march on the world, when we feel the wounds of selfishness or violence burning in our flesh and in our society, let us not lose heart, let us return to the announcement of this night: the light slowly shines even if we are in darkness; the hope of a new life and of a finally liberated world awaits us; a new beginning can surprise us even if at times it seems impossible, because Christ has conquered death.

The Christian faith – let us remember – does not want to confirm our certainties, make us settle into easy religious certainties, give us quick answers to the complex problems of life. On the contrary, when God calls he always inspires a journey, as it was for Abraham, for Moses, for the prophets and for all the disciples of the Lord. He sets us on a journey, takes us out of our comfort zones, questions our acquisitions and, precisely in this way, frees us, transforms us, illuminates the eyes of our hearts to make us understand what hope he has called us to. “ (cf. Eph 1:18).

These words leave no room for any rhetoric or any escape. As in the Crucifixion, also in the Resurrection the Father could have erased doubt, and he did not do so. The Father, the Son and the Spirit, give us the task of continuing to believe and to testify, not to demonstrate scientifically (or with the pretense of “negotiating”) what He asks of us out of faith and love, and to defeat doubt, but to collaborate in the salvation of this world, also on an educational level.

On January 4, 2025, Pope Francis received the Uciim and AIMC conference participants who celebrated the 80th anniversary of their foundation, concluding his speech with these words: “At the beginning of your history there was the intuition that only by associating, walking together, could we improve the school, which by its nature is a community, in need of everyone’s contribution. Your founders lived in times in which the values ​​of the person and of democratic citizenship needed to be witnessed and strengthened, for the good of all; and also the value of educational freedom. Never forget where you come from, but do not walk with your head turned backwards, regretting the good old days!

Instead, think about the present of the school, which is the future of society, grappling with an epochal transformation. Think of the young teachers who are taking their first steps in school and the families who feel alone in their educational task. To each one, propose with humility and innovation your educational and associative style. All this you I encourage you to do it together, with a sort of “pact between associations”, because in this way you can better bear witness to the face of the Church in school and for school. So go forward with confidence! I bless you and all those who form the network of your Associations”. “Brothers and sisters, this is the call that we must feel strongly within us: let the hope of Easter sprout in our lives and in the world!

Les nouvelles avancées vers la guerre mondiale entre Israël et l'Iran et la barbarie du conflit israélo-palestinien à Gaza et en Cisjordanie évoquent deux devises latines : la tragique mais de plus en plus pratiquée « mors tua, vita mea » et la plus juste mais moins pratiquée « vita tua, vita mea ». Les idées, les principes et les institutions (les Constitutions, l'ONU et le droit international des droits de l'homme et le droit humanitaire) sont de plus en plus considérés comme des utopies historiquement dépassées. À cet égard, deux passages des derniers discours du pape François m'ont semblé éclairants, comme un précieux témoignage, dont je citerai quelques phrases.

Lorsque nous sentons encore le poids de la mort peser sur nos cœurs, lorsque nous voyons les ombres du mal poursuivre leur marche bruyante sur le monde, lorsque nous sentons les blessures de l'égoïsme ou de la violence brûler dans notre chair et dans notre société, ne nous décourageons pas, revenons à l'annonce de cette nuit : la lumière brille lentement, même si nous sommes dans l'obscurité ; l'espérance d'une vie nouvelle et d'un monde enfin libéré nous attend ; un nouveau départ peut nous surprendre, même s'il semble parfois impossible, car le Christ a vaincu la mort.

La foi chrétienne – rappelons-le – ne veut pas confirmer nos certitudes, nous enfermer dans des certitudes religieuses faciles, nous donner des réponses rapides aux problèmes complexes de la vie. Au contraire, lorsque Dieu appelle, il inspire toujours un chemin, comme ce fut le cas pour Abraham, pour Moïse, pour les prophètes et pour tous les disciples du Seigneur. Il nous met en chemin, nous fait sortir de nos zones de confort, remet en question nos acquis et, précisément ainsi, il nous libère, nous transforme, illumine les yeux de notre cœur pour nous faire comprendre ce qu'est l'espérance. Il nous a appelés à cela. » (cf. Éph 1, 18).

Ces paroles ne laissent place à aucune rhétorique ni à aucune échappatoire. Comme lors de la Crucifixion, lors de la Résurrection aussi, le Père aurait pu dissiper le doute, et il ne l'a pas fait. Le Père, le Fils et l'Esprit nous confient la tâche de continuer à croire et à témoigner, non pas pour démontrer scientifiquement (ou sous prétexte de « négocier ») ce qu'Il nous demande par foi et par amour, et pour vaincre le doute, mais pour collaborer au salut de ce monde, y compris sur le plan éducatif.

Le 4 janvier 2025, le pape François a reçu les participants à la conférence de l'Uciim et de l'AIMC, qui célébraient le 80e anniversaire de leur fondation. Il a conclu son discours par ces mots : « Au début de votre histoire, vous avez eu l'intuition que ce n'est qu'en vous associant, en cheminant ensemble, que nous pourrions améliorer l'école, qui est par nature une communauté, nécessitant la contribution de tous. Vos fondateurs ont vécu une époque où les valeurs de la personne et de la citoyenneté démocratique devaient être reconnues et renforcées, pour le bien de tous ; ainsi que la valeur de la liberté éducative. N'oubliez jamais d'où vous venez, mais ne marchez pas la tête tournée vers l'arrière, en regrettant le bon vieux temps !

Pensez plutôt au présent de l'école, qui est l'avenir de la société, aux prises avec une transformation historique. Pensez aux jeunes enseignants qui font leurs premiers pas à l'école et aux familles qui se sentent seules dans leur mission éducative. À chacun, proposez avec humilité et innovation votre style éducatif et associatif. Je vous encourage à le faire ensemble, dans une sorte de « pacte ». « Entre les associations », car ainsi vous pourrez mieux témoigner du visage de l'Église à l'école et pour l'école. Alors, allez de l'avant avec confiance ! Je vous bénis, vous et tous ceux qui forment le réseau de vos associations. » « Frères et sœurs, tel est l'appel que nous devons ressentir fortement en nous : que l'espérance de Pâques germe dans nos vies et dans le monde ! »

Los nuevos pasos hacia la guerra mundial entre Israel e Irán y la barbarie del conflicto israelí-palestino en Gaza y Cisjordania evocan dos lemas latinos: el trágico, pero cada vez más practicado, «mors tua, vita mea»; y el más justo, pero menos practicado, «vita tua, vita mea». Las ideas, los principios y las instituciones (las Constituciones, la ONU y el derecho internacional de los derechos humanos y el derecho humanitario) se consideran cada vez más utopías históricamente obsoletas. En este sentido, dos pasajes de los últimos discursos del Papa Francisco me parecieron esclarecedores, como un valioso testimonio, del que citaré algunas frases.

Cuando aún sentimos el peso de la muerte en nuestros corazones, cuando vemos las sombras del mal continuar su marcha ruidosa sobre el mundo, cuando sentimos las heridas del egoísmo o la violencia arder en nuestra carne y en nuestra sociedad, no nos desanimemos, volvamos al anuncio de esta noche: la luz brilla lentamente aunque estemos en la oscuridad; nos espera la esperanza de una nueva vida y de un mundo finalmente liberado; un nuevo comienzo puede sorprendernos aunque a veces parezca imposible, porque Cristo ha vencido a la muerte.

La fe cristiana —recordemos— no quiere confirmar nuestras certezas, hacernos acomodar en fáciles certezas religiosas, darnos respuestas rápidas a los complejos problemas de la vida. Al contrario, cuando Dios llama, siempre inspira un camino, como lo fue para Abraham, para Moisés, para los profetas y para todos los discípulos del Señor. Nos pone en camino, nos saca de nuestra zona de confort, cuestiona nuestras adquisiciones y, precisamente así, nos libera, nos transforma, ilumina los ojos de nuestro corazón para hacernos comprender. A qué esperanza nos ha llamado» (cf. Ef 1,18).

Estas palabras no dejan lugar a retórica ni a evasión. Como en la Crucifixión, también en la Resurrección el Padre pudo haber disipado la duda, y no lo hizo. El Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu nos encomiendan la tarea de seguir creyendo y dar testimonio, no para demostrar científicamente (ni con la pretensión de «negociar») lo que Él nos pide por fe y amor, ni para vencer la duda, sino para colaborar en la salvación de este mundo, también a nivel educativo.

El 4 de enero de 2025, el Papa Francisco recibió a los participantes de la conferencia Uciim y AIMC que celebraban el 80 aniversario de su fundación, concluyendo su discurso con estas palabras: «Al comienzo de su historia, se intuía que solo asociándonos, caminando juntos, podríamos mejorar la escuela, que por naturaleza es una comunidad, necesitada de la contribución de todos. Sus fundadores vivieron en tiempos en los que los valores de la persona y de la ciudadanía democrática debían ser presenciados y fortalecidos, por el bien de todos; y también el valor de la libertad educativa. Nunca olviden de dónde vienen, pero no caminen con la cabeza hacia atrás, lamentando los buenos tiempos».

En cambio, piensen en el presente de la escuela, que es el futuro de la sociedad, lidiando con una transformación trascendental. Piensen en los jóvenes docentes que dan sus primeros pasos en la escuela y en las familias que se sienten solas en su tarea educativa. A cada uno, propongan con humildad e innovación su estilo educativo y asociativo. Les animo a hacerlo juntos, con una especie de... “Pacto entre asociaciones”, porque así podrán dar mejor testimonio del rostro de la Iglesia en la escuela y para la escuela. ¡Avancen, pues, con confianza! Los bendigo a ustedes y a todos los que forman la red de sus asociaciones. Hermanos y hermanas, esta es la llamada que debemos sentir con fuerza en nosotros: ¡que la esperanza de la Pascua brote en nuestras vidas y en el mundo!

Dear brothers and sisters, good morning!

I am pleased to meet you on the occasion of the anniversaries of your Associations: the eightieth of the Italian Association of Catholic Primary School Teachers and of the Italian Union of Catholic School Teachers, Managers, Educators and Trainers, and the fiftieth of the Association of Catholic School Parents. It is a good opportunity to remember, to remember your history and to look to the future. This exercise, this movement between roots, memory and fruits, the results, is the key to commitment in education.

Our meeting takes place in the liturgical season of Christmas, a time that shows us God's pedagogy. And what is His “educational method”, God's educational method? It is that of proximity, closeness. God is close, compassionate and tender. The three qualities of God: closeness, compassion and tenderness. Closeness. Proximity. It is the Lord who, as a teacher who enters the world of his pupils, chooses to live among men to teach through the language of life and love. Jesus was born in a condition of poverty and simplicity: this calls us to a pedagogy that values the essential and places humility, gratuitousness and acceptance at the centre. A remote pedagogy, distant from the people, is no use, it does not help. Christmas teaches us that greatness is not manifested in success or wealth, but in love and service to others. God’s is a pedagogy of giving, a call to live in communion with Him and with others, as part of a plan of universal fraternity, a plan in which the family has a central and irreplaceable position. The family. In addition, this pedagogy is an invitation to recognize the dignity of every person, starting from those who are rejected and at the margins, just as the shepherds were treated two thousand years ago, and to appreciate the value of every phase of life, including childhood. The family is at the centre, do not forget. Someone told me that one Sunday he was having lunch in a restaurant, and at a nearby table there was a family: father, mother, son and daughter. All four of them were on their mobile phones, and they did not talk among themselves. This man felt something, and he approached them, saying: “But you are a family, why don’t you talk to each other and talk like this, it is strange…”. They listened to him, then they sent him packing and carried on doing these things… Please, in the family, one talks! Family is dialogue, it is dialogue that makes us grow.

Today’s meeting also takes place at the beginning of the Jubilee journey, which began a few days ago with the celebration of the event by which, with the incarnation of the Son of God, hope entered the world. The Jubilee has a lot to say to the world of education, and also to the world of the school. Indeed, “pilgrims of hope” are all the people who look for a meaning for their life and also those who help the smallest to walk on this path. A good teacher is a man or a woman of hope, because they devote themselves with confidence and patience to a project of human growth. Their hope is not naive, it is rooted in reality, sustained by the conviction that every educational effort has value and that every person has a dignity and every person has a vocation that deserve to be nurtured. It pains me when I see children who are not educated and who go to work, many times exploited, or who go looking for food or things to sell among the rubbish. It is hard. And there are such children!

Hope is the motor that sustains the educator in their daily effort, even in difficulty and failure. But what can we do so as not to lose hope, and to foster it every day? Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, teacher and travelling companion: this allows us truly to be pilgrims of hope. Think of the people you meet at school, children and adults: “Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring” (Spes non confundit, 1). These human hopes, through each one of us, can encounter Christian hope, the hope that is born of faith and lives in charity. And let us not forget: hope does not disappoint. Optimism disappoints, but hope does not disappoint. A hope that exceeds every human desire, because it opens minds and hearts to life and eternal beauty.

The school needs this! You are called to develop and transmit a new culture, a new culture, based on the encounter between generations, on inclusion, on the discernment of the true, the good and the beautiful; a culture of responsibility, both personal and collective, to face global challenges such as the environmental, social and economic crises, and the great challenge of peace. At school you can “imagine peace”, that is, lay the foundations for a more just and fraternal world, with the contribution of all disciplines and the creativity of children and young people. But if at school you wage war among yourselves, if at school you bully girls and boys who have problems, that is preparing for war, not peace. Please, never bullying, do you understand this? I think not... [reply: ‘Yes!’] No bullying! Let us all say it together! Come on! Never bully! I don't understand... [repeat: Never bully!] Be bold and go ahead. Work on this.

Dear sisters and dear brothers, you are here today to celebrate significant anniversaries for your associations, which were founded to offer a contribution to the school, for the best fulfilment of its educational purposes. Ah, I can’t remember, what was it you were saying? [They answer: “No bullying!”]. Understood. And not to the school as a container, but to the people who live and work in it: the students, the teachers, the parents, the administrators and all the staff. At the beginning of your history there was the insight that only by associating, walking together, can one improve the school, which by its nature is a community, a community in need of the contribution of everyone. Your founders lived in times when the values of the person and of democratic citizenship needed to be witnessed and strengthened, for the good of all; and also the value of educational freedom. Never forget where you come from, but do not walk with your head facing the other way, mourning times past! This is important. And what mustn’t you do, what was it? [They answer: “Never bully!”]. You have learned! Think instead of the present of the school, which is the future of society, getting to grips with an epoch change. Think of the young teachers who are taking their first steps in school, and of the families who feel alone in their educational task. To each one of them, propose your educational and associative style with humility and freshness; and what was it? [They answer: “No bullying!”] Do not forget this.

I encourage you to do all this together, with a sort of “pact between associations”, because in this way you can better bear witness to the face of the Church in the school and for the school. Hope never disappoints, never; hope is never still, it is always on the move, and makes us move. So, go forward confidently! I bless you all and those who make up the network of your associations. And do not forget to pray for me, and do not forget to…? [They answer: “Never bully!”]. You have learned! Thank you.

SCHOOL and BEAUTY

 


"What does beauty have to do with it

with the school?

 The purpose of life is not survival but beauty.

It is clear that things struggle to survive, what is surprising is that the struggle aims at beauty.

A few days ago it became clear to me once again in a small square in Milan: the first blooms were already shining on the branches of some magnolias, in a still winter light. It wasn't an anomaly. Many stopped to admire, seized by that desire that beauty awakens because, beauty being a complete life, it reminds us that we are made for this: to fulfill ourselves in the time and in the world given to us. Beauty asks: where are you with the gifts of life? And if beauty is the aim of life, it should also be the aim of education which is to help life grow.

Does it happen in the place designated, after the family, for this: the school? There you should discover your own uniqueness and then bring it to fruition by searching in the world and in time for what serves the purpose. Yet, the «XXI Profile of graduates» presented on 29 February by AlmaDiploma , already analyzed on these pages, reports that one in two young people say they have the wrong school and university address. Inevitable outcome of an orientation that is almost absent in lower and upper secondary schools. You leave middle school and high school possessing skills, but not yourself. And without this you cannot be happy. Why?

In a world where the criterion of happiness is efficiency, what matters is to acquire "spendable" skills at work as soon as possible.

Being "spendable" means being "purchasable", that is, becoming a "resource" ourselves to be "exhausted": this means resource, and unfortunately we have decided that people are human resources.

Instead, happiness depends on the depth of relationships we have with the world and with others: our happy memories in fact concern what we have created with our attitudes and the significant relationships we have formed. If I don't know who I am and who I'm with, skills are just clothes on a mannequin.

Orientation should serve to discover one's talents and then make them flourish for the benefit of others over time, thanks to land and gardeners chosen because they are suitable for those characteristics, such as the magnolias that attract passers-by to stop and children to play. Not knowing themselves (i.e. not being recognized by those who educate them), children rely on fleeting impressions, majority choices, family expectations. One cannot not choose but if one does not have the energy and courage of a vocation, one chooses what seems most certain, comfortable, safe, thus giving up one's own specific beauty. This is why many kids find themselves in lives that are not theirs, with the sense of guilt and anxiety typical of a culture of perfection and performance. Unlike those magnolias who do what they are called to do in the time they need, right in the middle of traffic, we risk being swallowed up by that traffic: a world that tells us how to be and what to do before allowing us to discover who we are and for whom. Can a magnolia be happy when asked to bear pears or to flower in all seasons? It will come into contradiction with itself , it will be exploited (deprived of its fruits) and it will wither.

With the aim of providing orientation in the school, the figure of the tutor teacher was introduced this year. It is a first step, but a 20-hour online training cannot be enough for the patient educational work necessary to discover the uniqueness of a child. You don't become a gardener in 20 hours and man is more complex than a magnolia. A few days ago I read the interview with the footballer Rafa Leão , for whom I have a very partial footballing sympathy, who spoke about his childhood in Lisbon: «the ball is always at my feet in a very working-class neighbourhood, most of its inhabitants are immigrants, many from Africa. Not an easy place. The good thing was that there was football there, I played with it from morning to night. Entire afternoons in the supermarket car park. Often it was crumpled up papers or a can or bottle used as a ball, while a car was the goal. My way of playing is still the same, street football, made up of feints, shots and cunning." That child, like every child, had a vocation that would have made him happy: «God gave me a gift and I am grateful to him. My job is to play football, I fulfilled my childhood dream. How could I not smile?". And that child continues to look for beauty and joy: «I love beautiful goals. Football today is just statistics, figures. And I don't like it. Football is magic, joy. It makes me angry that people only think about numbers. I'm not like that. Because people have to have fun. So I have to have fun too. I'm for beauty." But without what his family and first teachers did for him, that talent would have gone to waste.

 The levels of life speak different dialects but the language is the same: the talent of the footballer and that of the magnolias are gifts given to individuals for the benefit of the world. I discovered that the magnolias in that square are called soulangeane , a species whose white, pink and purple flowers bloom while the branches of the other trees are still bare. Their name comes from an officer of the Napoleonic army, Étienne Soulange -Bodin (1774–1846), who created the hybrid from two Chinese varieties in the campaign to which he dedicated the second part of his life, becoming a famous botanist. A man who had wasted time in military campaigns was then able to return to the actual campaigns, his vocation, and that of every man: to create beauty. Today we think of a person in training as a machine on which to install increasingly updated and faster software; instead, we are more similar to plants which, with their intrinsic and specific energy, create, without haste or delay, the beauty to which they are called. And they do not do it in competition (competence and competition have the same root and will therefore have the same fruits: everyone fights to emerge but we know that those who are already advantaged will succeed), but in collaboration (working together: each one emerges for his uniqueness which makes him makes it necessary to others, which it in turn needs).


Cooperation is for me one of the most interesting chapters of recent botany, developed in recent years by the studies of Suzanne Simard who has rewritten the competitive paradigm in the evolution of plants (I recommend the TedTalk «How trees talk to each other » of 2016 and his book The mother tree ): when the tree of a group is threatened or becomes ill, the other specimens, even of different species, exchange not only aerial information via diffusible hormones but above all nutrients through l the immense network of their roots. Trees are not first and foremost individual actors competing for resources, but a collaborative system, with some trees which due to their age have a central role in the birth and life of the youngest ones. This system is defined by Simard as « intelligence of the forest ». Until the school has this intelligence, it will only use the language of usefulness and efficiency (performance, credits, debts, skills...) and not of life (growth, maturation, cooperation, vocation...) its « shoots" will often wither before "maturity" instead of becoming beautiful like the magnolias which, even on busy and polluted asphalt, push us to stop and breathe and ask ourselves why and for whom we are here.

L’arcivescovo di Milano: “Dov’è la scuola? 

È là dove c’è gente che ama l’umanità e il suo futuro”

 «Dov’è la scuola?» si interrogano i bambini che si affacciano per la prima volta, tenuti per mano da genitori più in ansia di loro, mentre entrano nell’edificio più volte guardato dall’esterno con un desiderio vivo di entrare nel mondo nuovo.

«Dov’è la scuola?» si domandano i dirigenti, i docenti, il personale che inizia un anno di responsabilità e di lavoro in una nuova sede e studia i percorsi, i parcheggi e soprattutto i volti di colleghi e collaboratori per capire dove si sia capitati.

 «Dov’è la scuola?» si domanda l’agente della polizia locale incaricato di organizzare il caos dei primi giorni e l’ingorgo di auto e pedoni.

 Ma la domanda non cerca solo l’indirizzo da impostare sul navigatore. Piuttosto intende collocare la scuola in un contesto in cui urge una fierezza di essere scuola, una proposta di relazioni, di istruzione, di valori civici.

 «Dov’è la scuola?» è l’appello all’istituzione che raduna la totalità della generazione del futuro perché la scuola sia riconoscibile come una comunità plurale e corale, propositiva e paziente. La molteplicità delle esigenze, delle aspettative, delle problematiche deve essere condotta a una presenza riconoscibile e autorevole per offrire percorsi di formazione, di educazione, di ricerca vocazionale.

 «Dov’è la scuola?» è il rimprovero da rivolgere a chi a scuola non ci va, alle famiglie che non sono in grado o non hanno voglia di pretendere che i figli frequentino con regolarità e impegno il percorso scolastico che la comunità propone.

 «Dov’è la scuola?» è la richiesta che si deve porre ai responsabili del bene comune e degli investimenti, perché si provveda a riparare i danni delle tempeste estive, ad adeguare gli edifici perché siano sicuri, accoglienti, belli, adeguatamente vigilati.

 «Dov’è la scuola?» è la domanda che mi pongo, perché vorrei entrare in ogni scuola e in ogni classe per dire un augurio, per assicurare la disponibilità della comunità cristiana locale a coltivare buoni rapporti per una rispettosa e costruttiva collaborazione al servizio del bene di tutti.

 Vorrei dire a ogni dirigente, a ogni docente, a ogni persona del servizio alla struttura la mia stima, il mio incoraggiamento e la mia benedizione per l’anno scolastico che inizia e la speranza che non tardi troppo e non sia troppo complicata l’alleanza con le famiglie, con le espressioni del territorio che accompagnano i più giovani nello sport, nelle arti, nell’affrontare i problemi di salute, di disabilità, di inserimento.

 «Dov’è la scuola?». Io posso rispondere: la scuola è nel pensiero e nella passione di chi vi lavora, la scuola è tra le priorità delle amministrazioni e delle istituzioni, la scuola è nel buon senso lungimirante delle famiglie che chiedono istruzione e formazione per il futuro dei propri figli.

 Ecco dov’è la scuola, là dove c’è gente che ama l’umanità e il suo futuro. Con ogni buon augurio.

 It is where there are people who love humanity and its future."

 "Where is the school?" wonder the children looking out for the first time, held by the hands of parents more anxious than they are, as they enter the building many times looked at from the outside with a vivid desire to enter the new world.

 "Where is the school?" wonder the principals, faculty, and staff as they begin a year of responsibility and work in a new location and study the routes, parking lots, and especially the faces of colleagues and co-workers to figure out where they have landed.

 "Where is the school?" wonders the local police officer in charge of organizing the chaos of the early days and the traffic jam of cars and pedestrians.

 But the question is not just looking for an address to set on the navigator. Rather, it seeks to place the school in a context where a pride in being a school, a proposal for relationships, education, and civic values, is urgently needed.

 "Where is the school?" is the call to the institution that gathers the totality of the future generation for the school to be recognizable as a plural and choral community, purposeful and patient. The multiplicity of needs, expectations, and problems must be led to a recognizable and authoritative presence to offer pathways for formation, education, and vocational research.

 "Where is the school?" is the rebuke to be addressed to those who do not go to school, to families who are unable or unwilling to demand that their children attend with regularity and commitment the schooling that the community offers.

 "Where is the school?" is the demand that must be put to those responsible for the common good and investment, so that the damage of the summer storms can be repaired, buildings adapted so that they are safe, welcoming, beautiful, and adequately supervised.

 "Where is the school?" is the question I ask, for I would like to enter every school and every classroom to say a good wish, to assure the readiness of the local Christian community to cultivate good relationships for respectful and constructive cooperation in the service of the good of all.

 I would like to say to every principal, every teacher, every facility service person my esteem, my encouragement and my blessing for the school year that is beginning and my hope that the alliance with families, with the expressions of the territory that accompany the youngest in sports, in the arts, in dealing with problems of health, of disability, of inclusion, will not be too late and will not be too complicated.

 "Where is school?" I can answer school is in the thinking and passion of those who work there, school is among the priorities of administrations and institutions, school is in the forward-looking common sense of families who demand education and training for the future of their children.

 That is where the school is, where there are people who love humanity and its future. With every good wish.

PHILIPPINES - RECOLLECTION FOR GRADUATING


  CTGP Facilitates Recollection

Recollection for graduating students & Faculty  for graduating senior high school and for the Faculty members of Allen National High School, Catarman, Samar

 Some 350 graduating senior high school of Allen National High School, Catarman Samar, Philippines had their first Recollection a week before graduation exercises. This was facilitated by Dr. Belén L. Tangco,OP,  National President of the Catholic Teachers’ Guild of the Philippines ( CTGP), Ms. Imelda Emoylan, OP and Bro. Melencio Garcia, OP on June 26, 2023.  The academic staff / Faculty had their recollection in the afternoon with Belén Tangco as resource speaker, sharing best  experiences in teaching.

 Ms. EMOYLAN shared her best experiences in catechetical classes in basic education, and Bro. Melencio served as main Facilitator, being Assistant Promoter of vocations and Pastoral Director of UST Central Seminary.

 More recollections have been scheduled as per request of the Principals of the Junior and Senior High School.

 Cari fratelli e sorelle, buongiorno e benvenuti!

 Ringrazio il Presidente per le sue parole di saluto e tutti voi, appartenenti all’Unione Mondiale degli Insegnanti Cattolici (UMEC). Saluto e ringrazio il Cardinale Farrell, l’Arcivescovo Mons. Dollmann che è l’Assistente ecclesiastico e gli altri Vescovi presenti e il Segretario del Dicastero per la Cultura e l’Educazione.

 Siete riuniti qui in questi giorni a Roma per la vostra Assemblea Generale, che dovrà anche eleggere il nuovo Consiglio internazionale. Esprimo la mia gratitudine ai membri del Comitato di Presidenza uscente per il fedele e generoso servizio prestato per molti anni, nella certezza che il lavoro svolto – disinteressatamente e con grande passione – porterà frutti nel futuro: lavoro per dare frutti.

 Avete vissuto tempi non facili nella vostra storia recente, anche con momenti di dubbio e scoraggiamento. A volte sembrava quasi che non ci fossero più le condizioni per continuare, che si dovesse finire. Ma, grazie a Dio, anche in questi periodi di burrasca, avete perseverato! Avete confidato in Dio e nel sostegno della Chiesa, avete continuato a impegnarvi in uno spirito di fede e di speranza cristiana. Siatene certi: i semi gettati nella speranza mettono radici e crescono sempre!

 Anche l’UMEC, come molte altre associazioni cattoliche, si trova di fronte alla sfida del cambio generazionale, che riguarda in particolare i dirigenti. Vi invito a considerare questa esigenza con uno sguardo positivo. La realtà non è mai statica, è dinamica. E questo naturalmente vale anche per le aggregazioni ecclesiali: si evolvono e si sviluppano con il mutare dei tempi, e ogni cambio d’epoca le pone di fronte a una nuova missione. Perciò, il rinnovamento al vostro interno e nei ruoli di maggiore responsabilità va visto come l’inizio di una nuova missione, come un’opportunità per rilanciare con vigore le vostre attività di servizio e di sostegno alle nuove generazioni di insegnanti cattolici, sia quelli che lavorano nelle scuole cattoliche, sia quelli che operano in istituzioni interconfessionali o secolari.  .....

L'ÉCOLE QUE JE VEUX

 A quoi sert principalement l'école ? Il existe de nombreuses réponses possibles à cette question. L'école est le lieu de rencontre avec la culture, où s'opère la transmission d'un patrimoine précieux aux jeunes générations (traditio signifie transmission). Mais l'école est aussi le lieu de la préparation de l'avenir, une invitation à l'aventure de la connaissance (ad ventura signifie se tourner vers ce qui n'est pas encore là, vers l'inexploré). Et, entre le passé (tradition) et l'avenir (aventure), l'école est le lieu de la rencontre avec les autres, de la relation, de la découverte de ne pas être seul au monde, ni le centre du monde, de ne pas être des monarques absolus (ab solutus signifie sans liens), mais reliés, interdépendants, faisant partie d'une communauté. On va certes à l'école pour apprendre des connaissances et développer des compétences, mais pas en tant que monades isolées les unes des autres, mais en tant que personnes, c'est-à-dire en tant qu'être en relation. Comme le dit un proverbe africain, "nous sommes des personnes à travers d'autres personnes".

 En d'autres termes, on va à l'école pour apprendre et apprendre à apprendre, mais aussi pour apprendre à vivre ensemble, pacifiquement, de manière constructive, en solidarité avec les autres.

 Ainsi, nous allons à l'école pour devenir nous-mêmes (ce qui signifie apprendre à découvrir nos talents et à en prendre soin) et, en même temps, nous allons à l'école pour apprendre à le faire avec d'autres, faits de la même pâte humaine que nous, non pas des étrangers, mais des frères et des sœurs, avec lesquels nous partageons la même maison et le même destin.

 Les trois mots de la Révolution française expriment cette idée de citoyenneté : liberté, égalité, fraternité. Nous allons à l'école non seulement pour apprendre leur signification, mais surtout leur relation nécessaire, car ce ne sont pas des mots "ab solute", mais liés, non pas indépendants mais interdépendants. En effet, la liberté, sans règles, tend à détruire l'égalité ; l'égalité, si elle est imposée, tend à détruire la liberté ; la fraternité ne peut être ni décrétée ni imposée, mais elle est nécessaire aux deux et doit être encouragée.

 Que se passe-t-il, en effet, sans une fraternité consciemment cultivée, sans une volonté politique de fraternité, traduite par une éducation à la fraternité, au dialogue, à la découverte de la réciprocité et de l'enrichissement mutuel comme valeurs ?

 What is school primarily for? There are many possible answers to this question. School is the place of encounter with culture, where the transmission of a precious heritage to the younger generations takes place (traditio means transmission). However, school is also the place of preparation for the future, an invitation to the adventure of knowledge (ad ventura means turning towards the things that are not yet there, towards the unexplored). And, between the past (tradition) and the future (adventure), school is the place of encounter with others, of relationships, of the discovery of not being alone in the world, nor the centre of the world, of not being absolute monarchs (ab solutus means without ties), but connected, interdependent, part of a community. One certainly goes to school to learn knowledge and develop skills, but not as monads isolated from each other, but as persons, that is, as beings in relationship. As an African proverb says, 'we are people through other people'.

 In other words, one goes to school to learn and to learn to learn, but also to learn to live together, peacefully, constructively, in solidarity with others.

 So, we go to school to become ourselves (which means learning to discover our talents and take care of them) and, at the same time, we go to school to learn to do this together with others, made of the same human dough as us, not strangers, but brothers and sisters, with whom we share the same home and the same destiny.

 The three words of the French Revolution express this idea of citizenship: liberty, equality, fraternity. We go to school not only to learn their meaning, but above all their necessary relationship, because they are not words 'ab solute', but related, not independent but interdependent. Indeed, freedom, without rules, tends to destroy equality; equality, if imposed, tends to destroy freedom; fraternity can neither be decreed nor imposed, but is necessary for both and must be encouraged.

 What happens, in fact, without a consciously cultivated fraternity, without a political will for fraternity, translated into an education in fraternity, in dialogue, in the discovery of reciprocity and mutual enrichment as values?

5 OCTOBER - WORLD TEACHERS ' DAY

Events on October 5-7 for World Teachers' Day 2022

World Teachers’ Day is held on 5 October to celebrate teachers. The Day is co-convened by UNESCO with the International Labour Organization, UNICEF and Education International. As noted on the UNESCO website, the theme for 2022 is “The transformation of education begins with teachers”. Celebrations will address the commitments and calls for action made at the Transforming Education Summit, in September 2022, and analyze the implications they have for teachers and teaching. A series of events will showcase how guaranteeing teachers' decent working conditions, access to professional development opportunities and a recognized professional status is a first step towards more resilient education systems. La Journée mondiale des enseignants a lieu le 5 octobre pour célébrer les enseignants. El Día Mundial de los Docentes se celebra el 5 de octubre para celebrar a los docentes.
