FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE
WORLD DAY OF PEACE

My Message is also addressed to parents, families and all those involved in the area of education and formation, as well as to leaders in the various spheres of religious, social, political, economic and cultural life and in the media. Attentiveness to young people and their concerns, the ability to listen to them and appreciate them, is not merely something expedient; it represents a primary duty for society as a whole, for the sake of building a future of justice and peace. It is a matter of communicating to young people an appreciation for the positive value of life and of awakening in them a desire to spend their lives in the service of the Good. This is a task which engages each of us personally......

Christmas 2011 and the New Year 2012

Christmas 2011 and the New Year 2012

May the gift of the Incarnation bring peace and happiness to you, your family, and all with whom and for whom you work.

On behalf of all who are involved in the World Union of Catholic Teachers, I wish you a very happy and holy Christmas. May the Peace and Joy of Christ continue with you through the New Year and throughout 2012.

Mark Philpot President, WUCT

WUCT-UMEC BRIEFING december 2012

BENEDICT XVI :

"As Christmas approaches, I offer prayerful good wishes to you and your families for a spiritually fruitful celebration of the Lord’s birth. At Midnight Mass, we sing: “Today a Saviour is born for us”. This “Today” evokes an eternal present, for the mystery of Christ’s coming transcends time and permeates all history. “Today” – every day - we are invited to discover the presence of God’s saving love in our midst. In the birth of Jesus, God comes to us and asks us to receive him, so that he can be born in our lives and transform them, and our world, by the power of his love. The Christmas liturgy also invites us to contemplate Christ’s birth against the backdrop of his paschal mystery. Christmas points beyond itself, to the redemption won for us on the Cross and the glory of the Resurrection. May this Christmas fill you with joy in the knowledge that God has drawn near to us and is with us at every moment of our lives".

Human Rights Day 2011

Human Rights Day 2011

It has been a year like no other for human rights. Human rights activism has never been more topical or more vital. And through the transforming power of social media, ordinary people have become human rights activists.

This year, millions of people decided the time had come to claim their rights. They took to the streets and demanded change. Many found their voices using the internet and instant messaging to inform, inspire and mobilize supporters to seek their basic human rights. Social media helped activists organize peaceful protest movements in cities across the globe - from Tunis to Madrid, from Cairo to New York - at times in the face of violent repression.

Human rights belong equally to each of us and bind us together as a global community with the same ideals and values. As a global community we all share a day in common: Human Rights Day on 10 December, when we remember the creation 63 years ago of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On Human Rights Day 2011, we pay tribute to all human rights defenders and ask you to get involved in the global human rights movement.

Education at the UNESCO General Conference

© UNESCO/Roger, Dominique

UNESCO’s 36th General Conference ( 25 October - 10 November, UNESCO, Paris) will determine UNESCO’s work and policies and fix its programme and budget for 2012-2013. Education is the largest programme of all, and therefore presents specific challenges.

Challenge number one is to ensure a more coordinated approach in working towards the EFA goals for the 2015 deadline and beyond. A new architecture of the global EFA coordination mechanism is expected to allow for UNESCO to take the lead in coordinating efforts among the numerous stakeholders in the Education for All (EFA) movement, including UNESCO Member States, the five EFA convening agencies, civil society and the private sector.

Challenge number two is a balancing act: to ensure a holistic vision of education while focusing on particular thematic areas - especially in times of financial constraint.

UNESCO promotes a holistic approach to education systems. This typically requires quality teacher training and management, strong higher education systems, development of curricula to nurture global citizenship, coherent policies and the promotion of education outside schools. However, in difficult financial situations, the challenge is to ensure that UNESCO continues to work in all relevant areas while focusing on particular areas for greater impact.

UNESCO will aim to strike the right balance in maintaining a holistic vision while keeping a programmatic and geographical focus on countries furthest from achieving EFA.

Composed of UNESCO Member States, Associate Members and observers from other organizations, the General Conference meets every two years. Each country has one vote. Its working languages are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
