THE EDUCATOR: ACCOMPANIES. LISTENS AND DIALOGUES

EN - FR - IT
Before the General Audience on Wednesday, the Pope met with a delegation from the "Global Researchers Advancing Catholic Education Project," reiterating the importance of a dynamic education.

-         -  Tiziana Campisi - Vatican City

To educate is not "to fill one's head with ideas," because "automatons" are formed, but to walk together with people in a "tension between risk and security." This is what Pope Francis said in an impromptu speech - after handing over his prepared words - to a delegation of the "Global Researchers Advancing Catholic Education Project" (GRACE), a new international research project promoted by volunteers with the aim of promoting the values of Catholic education in respect of identity and dialogue. The meeting took place in the atrium of the Paul VI Hall before the general audience.

The right to make mistakes

Pope Francis asked primary, secondary, and university teachers to support students in their educational journey. "You cannot educate," he added, "without walking together with the people you are educating. It is beautiful when you find educators who walk together with boys and girls." The Pope remarked that "to educate is not to say purely rhetorical things; to educate is to make what is said meet reality. Girls and boys have the right to make mistakes, but the educator accompanies them on the path to direct these mistakes so that they are not dangerous." The true educator," continued Pope Francis, "is never frightened by mistakes, no: he accompanies, takes them by the hand, listens, dialogues. He does not get frightened and waits. This is human education: to educate 'is this bringing forward and promoting growth, helping to grow'."

Educating in the tradition that is dynamic

The GRACE delegation, through a spokesperson, opened a dialogue with Pope Francis and explained to him that the aim of the project is precisely that of educating not only by transmitting knowledge but also by giving space to the spiritual and pastoral sphere and to what the elderly can pass on to the young. The Pope emphasized that "dialogue between young people and the elderly is important [...] because in order to grow, the tree needs a close relationship with its roots." He then recounted: "There is a poet from my land who says a beautiful thing: 'Everything that the tree has in bloom, comes from what it has under the ground'. Without roots, we cannot go forward. Only with roots do we become people'." Pope Francis, therefore, said no to cold and rigid traditionalism, reiterating that true tradition is "taking from the past to go forward. Tradition is not static: it is dynamic, tending to go forward.

THE PEACE IS TAKING RESPONSABILITY FOR OTHERS

  AR  - DE  - EN  - ES  - FR  - IT  - PL  - PT

.... The peace Jesus gives to us at Easter is not the peace that follows the strategies of the world, which believes it can obtain it through force, by conquest and with various forms of imposition. This peace is only an interval between wars: we are well aware of this. The peace of the Lord follows the way of meekness and mildness: it is taking  responsibility for others. Indeed, Christ took on himself our evil, sin and our death. He took all of this upon himself. In this way he freed us. He paid for us. His peace is not the fruit of some compromise, but rather is born of self-giving. This meek and courageous peace, though, is difficult to accept. In fact, the crowd who exalted Jesus is the same that a few days later would shout, “Crucify him!” and, fearful and disappointed, would not lift a finger for him.

In this regard, a great story by Dostoevsky, the so-called Legend of The Grand Inquisitor, is always relevant. It tells of Jesus who, after several centuries, returns to Earth. He is immediately welcomed by the rejoicing crowd, who recognizes and acclaims him. “Ah, you have returned! Come, come with us!”. But then he is arrested by the Inquisitor, who represents worldly logic. The latter interrogates him and criticizes him fiercely. The final reason for the rebuke is that Christ, although he could, never wanted to become Caesar, the greatest king of this world, preferring to leave mankind free rather than subjugate it and solve its problems by force. He could have established peace in the world, bending the free but precarious heart of man by force of a higher power, but he chose not to: he respected our freedom. “Hadst Thou taken the world and Caesar’s purple, Thou wouldst have founded the universal state and given universal peace” (The Brothers Karamazov , Milan 2012); and with a lashing sentence he concludes, “For if anyone has ever deserved our fires, it is Thou”. Here is the deception that is repeated throughout history, the temptation of a false peace, based on power, which then leads to hatred and the betrayal of God, and much bitterness in the soul.

In the end, according to the story, the Inquisitor “longed for [Jesus] to say something, however bitter and terrible”. But Christ  reacts with a gentle and concrete gesture: “He suddenly approached the old man in silence and softly kissed him on his bloodless aged lips”. Jesus’ peace does not overpower others; it is not an armed peace, never! The weapons of the Gospel are prayer, tenderness, forgiveness and freely-given love for one’s neighbour, love for every neighbour. This is how God’s peace is brought into the world. This is why the armed aggression of these days, like every war, is an outrage against God, a blasphemous betrayal of the Lord of Passover, a preference for the face of the false god of this world over his meek one. War is always a human act, to bring about the idolatry of power.

Before his final Passover, Jesus says to his disciples: “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (Jn 14:27). Yes, because while worldly power leaves only destruction and death in its wake — we have seen this in recent days — his peace builds up history, starting from the heart of every person who welcomes it. Easter is therefore the true feast of God and humanity, because the peace that Christ gained on the cross in giving himself is distributed to us. Therefore, the Risen Christ, on Easter Day, appears to the disciples, and how does he greet them? “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:19-21). This is the greeting of Christ victorious, the Risen Christ.

Brothers, sisters, Pasqua , [Italian word for Easter] signifies “passage”. This year above all, it is a blessed occasion to pass from the worldly god to the Christian God, from the greed that we carry within us to the charity that sets us free, from the expectation of a peace brought by force to the commitment to bear real witness to the peace of Jesus. Brothers and sisters, let us place ourselves before the Crucified One, the wellspring of our peace, and ask him for peace of heart and peace in the world.

WAR IS AN OUTRAGE AND A BLASPHEMY

Pope Francis denounces the worldly logic of power and violence, explaining that Jesus brings true peace through meekness and the Cross.

 -By Christopher Wells

At his weekly General Audience, Pope Francis once again denounced “the armed aggression of these days” as “an outrage against God.”

The way of meekness and the Cross

The Holy Father began his reflection by focusing on the feast of Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, which commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, “welcomed as the Messiah.” Pope Francis said the crowds that acclaimed Him expected Jesus to bring peace as a powerful liberator, or by initiating an era of social justice.

Jesus, however, does not rise to their expectations, but instead enters Jerusalem on a donkey: Jesus, the Pope said, brings peace “through meekness and mildness, symbolized by the tethered colt on which no one had ever sat.”

The peace of Christ

God’s way, the Pope explained, is different from the world’s ways. Jesus does not follow a worldly strategy of violence and intervention to bring about peace, which would end up being a false peace that amounts to little more than an interval between wars. Instead, “the peace of the Lord follows the way of meekness and the Cross, it is taking responsibility for others,” as Jesus took our evil, sin, and death upon Himself in order to free us.

To illustrate this point, Pope Francis recalled Dostoevsky’s tale of the Grand Inquisitor, who imprisoned Jesus when He returned to earth. The Inquisitor, said the Pope, represents “worldly logic,” and condemns Christ for not embracing worldly power. “Here is the deception that is repeated throughout history,” the Pope said, “the temptation of a false peace, based on power, which then leads to hatred and betrayal of God.”

A blasphemous betrayal of the Lord of Passover

The peace that Jesus brings “does not overpower others” the Pope continued. “It is not an armed peace.” Instead, “The weapons of the Gospel are prayer, tenderness, forgiveness, and freely-given love for one’s neighbour, to any neighbour.” This, he said, “is how God’s peace is brought into the world.”

War, on the other hand – not only the current conflict, but all wars – represents “an outrage against God, a blasphemous betrayal of the Lord of Passover, a preference for the face of the false god of this world” in place of the meek face of Jesus.”

“Always, war is a human action to bring about the idolatry of power.”

Asking Christ for peace

Pope Francis noted that before His final Passover, Jesus told His disciples not to be troubled or afraid. Although worldly power leaves death and destruction in its wake, the peace of Christ “builds up history, beginning in the heart of every person who welcomes us.” So, the Pope said, we look forward to Easter as “the true feast of God and humanity because the peace that Christ gained on the Cross in giving Himself is distributed to us.”

The Holy Father concluded his reflection by noting that the word “Pasqua,” the Italian word for Easter, signifies “passage.” This year, the Pope said, “it is a blessed occasion to pass from the worldly god to the Christian God, from the greed that we carry within us to the charity that sets us free, from the expectation of a peace brought by force to the commitment to bear real witness to the peace of Jesus.”

He invited everyone to place themselves “before the Crucified One, the wellspring of our peace, and ask him for peace of heart and peace in the world.”

ALLELUJA. LE CHRIST, LE VIVANT ! CHRIST, THE LIVING - CRISTO, EL VIVO !

The International Congress "Educating for Democracy in a Fragmented World" took place in Rome from March, 17 to 19.

The Congress is rooted in the urgency of providing new orizons and educational responses to the anthropological change in progress. The participants discussed about different democratic visions and practices spread throughout the world, aiming at proposing cultural, social, economic and ethical responses.

The Proceedings of the Congress will be published in the Foundation's series (Fari Educativi - Educational Beacons).
The participants - including the representatives of the 14 Universities involved in the project - were received in audience by Pope Francis. He highlighted 3 priorities: feeding young people’s thirst for democracy, teaching them that the respect for common good is also love and, finally, educating young generations to experience authority as a real service.
To all the collaborators and friends of the Foundation
Holy and Happy Easter of Resurrection!
