WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE CARE OF CREATION

Sweet song of praise for Creation has become 'anguished plea'

Pope Francis calls for a "covenant" between people and the environment God gave us, in his Message for the World Day of Prayer for Creation to be observed by the Church on September 1st. In the text published on Thursday, the Pope calls for decisive actions at the upcoming COP27 on Climate Change and COP15 on Biodiversity, and appeals for the adoption of four key principles.

Pope Francis has lamented that St. Francis' Canticle of Creation praising the environment, is turning into an "anguished cry" and plea for help as the environment deteriorates.

The Holy Father made this dire observation in his Message for the annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, observed by the Church on September 1st.

The ecumenical phase begins on September 1st with the World Day, and concludes on October 4th, with the feast of Saint Francis.

It is a special time for all Christians to pray and work together to care for our Common Home.

Anguished plea of mistreatment

The Pope's message began observing how, when listening, we can hear in the voice of Creation, a kind of "dissonance."

"On the one hand, we can hear a sweet song in praise of our beloved Creator; on the other," he said, "an anguished plea, lamenting our mistreatment of this our Common Home."

The sweet song of Creation, the Pope noted, invites us to practice an “ecological spirituality,” attentive to God’s presence in the natural world.

The Pope invited the faithful to join St. Francis of Assisi in singing: “Praise be to you, my Lord, for all your creatures,” and the psalmist in singing, “Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!”

“Tragically, that sweet song is accompanied by a cry of anguish. Or even better: a chorus of cries of anguish. In the first place, it is our sister, mother earth, who cries out.”

"Prey to our consumerist excesses," he said, "she weeps and implores us to put an end to our abuses and to her destruction.  Then too, there are all those different creatures who cry out."

He recalled the "countless species dying out and their hymns of praise, silenced."

The cry of the poor, native peoples, our children

Recalling the poorest among us who are crying out, the Pope said: "Exposed to the climate crisis, the poor feel even more gravely the impact of the drought, flooding, hurricanes and heat waves that are becoming ever more intense and frequent".

He also recalled the suffering of indigenous peoples. "As a result of predatory economic interests, their ancestral lands are being invaded and devastated on all sides, “provoking a cry that rises up to heaven.”

Finally, he recalled "the plea" of our children.

“Feeling menaced by shortsighted and selfish actions, today’s young people are crying out, anxiously asking us adults to do everything possible to prevent, or at least limit, the collapse of our planet’s ecosystems.”

Time to repent and change

Listening to these anguished cries, he said, we must repent and modify our lifestyles and destructive systems.

We are called, he said, to a new relationship with God, others and Creation. "The present state of decay of our Common Home, the Pope suggested, is not secondary to other global challenges and tragedies, noting it must be given the same attention.

The Pope called for nations to act, especially at the upcoming UN conferences dedicated to the environment this year.

Ambitious steps necessary at COP27 and COP15

COP27 on climate change in Egypt in November, the Pope said, represents the next opportunity for all to join in promoting the effective implementation of the Paris Agreement.

"For this reason, too," he pointed out, "I recently authorized the Holy See, in the name of and on behalf of the Vatican City State, to accede to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, in the hope that the humanity of the 21st century will be remembered for having generously shouldered its grave responsibilities.”

The Pope observed that the effort to achieve the Paris goal of limiting temperature increase to 1.5°C "is quite demanding," noting "it calls for responsible cooperation between all nations in presenting climate plans or more ambitious nationally determined contributions in order to reduce to zero, as quickly as possible, net greenhouse gas emissions."

Need 'covenant' between people and environment

This means, he appealed, "for 'converting' models of consumption and production, as well as lifestyles, in a way more respectful of Creation and the integral human development of all peoples, present and future, a development grounded in responsibility, prudence/precaution, solidarity, concern for the poor and for future generations."

“Underlying all this, there is need for a covenant between human beings and the environment, which, for us believers, is a mirror reflecting the creative love of God, from whom we come and towards whom we are journeying.”

The Pope said the transition brought about by this conversion "cannot neglect the demands of justice," especially for workers significantly affected by climate change's impact.

Nations must agree on four key principles

The COP15 summit on biodiversity to take place in Canada in December, the Pope said, "will offer to the goodwill of governments a significant opportunity to adopt a new multilateral agreement to halt the destruction of ecosystems and the extinction of species. "

The Pope called for all efforts to halt the further collapse of biodiversity, "our God-given “network of life,” and asked for prayers that nations agree on the following four "key" principles:

1. constructing a clear ethical basis for the changes needed to save biodiversity;

2. combating the loss of biodiversity, supporting conservation and cooperation, and satisfying people’s needs in a sustainable way;

3. promoting global solidarity in light of the fact that biodiversity is a global common good demanding a shared commitment

4. giving priority to people in situations of vulnerability, including those most affected by the loss of biodiversities, such as indigenous peoples, the elderly and the young

“Let me repeat: In the name of God, I ask the great extractive industries – mining, oil, forestry, real estate, agribusiness – to stop destroying forests, wetlands, and mountains, to stop polluting rivers and seas, to stop poisoning food and people”

"How can we fail to acknowledge the existence of an “ecological debt” incurred by the economically richer countries, who have polluted most in the last two centuries," the Pope said, stressing, "this demands that they take more ambitious steps at COP27 and at COP15."

The Pope said delay on the part of others, can never justify our own failure to act.

Decisive action necessary as we approach breaking point

As we reach "a breaking point," the Pope warned, "It is necessary for all of us to act decisively."

The Pope prayed that these two meetings work to unite the human family "in effectively confronting the double crisis of climate change and the reduction of biodiversity."

“Mindful of the exhortation of Saint Paul to rejoice with those who rejoice and to weep with those who weep, let us weep with the anguished plea of Creation.”

Pope Francis concluded by inviting faithful and people of goodwill to "hear that plea and respond to it with deeds, so that we and future generations can continue to rejoice in Creation’s sweet song of life and hope."

OFFER THE WORLD A NEW FACE FOR EUROPE

Pope Francis encourages young people gathered this week at the European Union Youth Conference in Prague to present to the world "a new face of Europe," one that is inclusive, educated, and not afraid to reject violence as "senseless" wars are fought around them.

Pope Francis has urged young people to present to the world a new face of Europe.

The Pope's words came in his message sent to the European Union Youth Conference, taking place 11-13 July in the Czech Republic's capital of Prague, in which he spoke about educating young people to create a better world.

New face of Europe

In particular, the Holy Father recalled the Global Compact on Education, launched in September 2019, and how the initiative promotes an alliance between educators around the world to educate the younger generations in fraternity, as a way to work toward a better continent.

"As young Europeans," he stressed, "you have an important mission. If in the past your ancestors went to other continents, not always for noble interests, it is now up to you to present the world with a new face of Europe."

In the message published on Monday, the Holy Father told young people to work toward excellence, but in a way that always considers helping and welcoming others and protecting the environment.

The Holy Father urged them to protect the environment, and encouraged them to read his 2015 encyclical Laudato sì.

He warned against institutions that keep the status quo, but may not work toward a true betterment of the world.

“Don’t let yourselves be seduced by the sirens that propose a life of luxury reserved for a small slice of the world. Instead, have that “broad outlook” that can take in all the rest of humanity, which is much bigger than our little continent. May you aspire to a life of dignity and sobriety, without luxury and waste, so that everyone in our world can enjoy a dignified existence.”

Conscientious objection' to 'senseless' war

Pope Francis also lamented the ongoing "senseless war" in Ukraine, following numerous wars fought on the continent. He recalled that the desire for a united Europe in the past led to a period of peace spanning some seven decades.

“Now we must all commit ourselves to putting an end to this dreadful war, where, as usual, a few powerful people decide and send thousands of young people to fight and die. In cases like this, it is legitimate to rebel!”

"Someone has said that, if the world were ruled by women, there would not be so many wars, because those who have the mission of giving life cannot make death choices," the Pope said.

In a similar vein, he added, "I like to think that if the world were ruled by young people, there would not be so many wars." Those who have their whole life ahead of them, the Pope suggested, do not want to ruin it and throw it away, but to live it to the full.

Blessed Franz Jägerstätter

"I would like to invite you to get to know the extraordinary figure of a young objector, a young European with “a broad outlook”, who fought against Nazism during the Second World War," the Pope said, noting, "His name was Franz Jägerstätter, and he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI."

"Franz was a young Austrian who, because of his Catholic faith, made a conscientious objection to the injunction to swear allegiance to Hitler and go to war. As a boy, he was cheerful, likeable and carefree, but as he matured, thanks also to his wife, Franziska, with whom he had three children, he changed his life and developed profound convictions. When called to arms, he refused, because he felt it was unjust to kill innocent lives."

Blessed Franz's decision, the Pope acknowledged, "triggered harsh reactions" towards him from his community, the mayor, and even members of his family.

"A priest tried to dissuade him for the sake of his family.  Everyone was against him, except his wife Franziska, who, despite knowing the price to be paid, always stood by her husband and supported him to the end. Despite cajoling and torture, Franz preferred to be killed than to kill," the Pope said.

"He considered the war totally unjustified. If all the young men called to arms had done as he did, Hitler would not have been able to carry out his diabolical plans," the Pope said.

"To triumph," he added, "evil needs accomplices."

Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, the Pope told the young people, was executed in the same prison where his contemporary, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German Lutheran theologian and anti-Nazi, was also imprisoned and met the same tragic end.

The Pope noted that these two young men with a “broad outlook” were killed "because they remained faithful to the ideals of their faith to the end."

Meaning of life comes from seeking the Truth

In his message, the Pope focused on different dimensions of education, including knowledge of oneself, of others and of creation, and lastly, of the beginning and end of all things.

"Dear young Europeans," he said, "I invite you to look upwards and beyond, to keep seeking the real meaning of your life, where you come from and where you are going, and the Truth, because we cannot live authentically if we do not seek the Truth. Walk with your feet firmly planted on the earth, but with a broad gaze, open to the horizon, open to the sky."

The Holy Father encouraged them to read his post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Christus vivit, addressed especially to young people, to help them in their endeavours.

Pope Francis concluded by calling on the young people to work toward a better society and world.

“May you be generative! Young people capable of generating new ideas, new visions of the world, of the economy, of politics, of social coexistence, but above of new paths to be travelled together. And may you also be generous in generating new lives, always and only as the fruit of love! The love of husband and wife, the love of family and children, but also love of Europe, so that it can be for everyone a land of peace, freedom and dignity.”

VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS - VIOLENCE DANS LES ECOLES - VIOLENCIA EN LAS ESCUELAS

School health and ending violence in schools

                                        (Call for papers)

Schools are a useful setting for delivering health interventions targeting children and youth. In some cases, the interventions may be directly related to the opportunity for some children and youth to be able to go to school and learn better while in school. The need for school health interventions has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on children’s health, including their mental health. The goal of this call for papers for a special journal issue is to share evidence and reflections on which school health interventions to consider, what works best based on international evidence, and how interventions have been or could be implemented, including in Christian schools. Papers on the state of school health – including measuring the mental health of students are also welcome, as are papers on violence in schools. Apart from original research articles, commentaries, case studies, and reviews of the literature can be submitted. For more information, please contact us.
