     As preparations continue for the Holy Year, the Dicastery for Evangelization presents the official Jubilee Calendar, website and app and announces the winner of the Competition for the official Jubilee Hymn.

The Holy Year 2025 is approaching and preparations are well underway.

At a press conference held on Tuesday in the Holy See Press Office, officials of the Section for Fundamental Questions regarding Evangelization in the World of the Dicastery for Evangelization detailed the several projects envisioned and the preparatory work achieved so far.

Speaking at the conference, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, the Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery’s Section in charge of coordinating the Vatican’s efforts for the event, said  that preparations are proceeding at full speed and are progressing significantly.   

Besides starting a series of operational meetings with the Italian government and authorities of the Lazio Region, and the City of Rome to discuss the realization of the infrastructure needed to facilitate the reception of the millions of pilgrims expected to visit the Eternal City in 2025, over the past year the Vatican Dicastery has set up four Commissions and a Technical Committee to support it in outlining the general programme.

Four Commissions

These include a Pastoral Commission, a working group composed of representatives of each Dicastery of the Roman Curia and pastoral contact persons of some ecclesial entities, and whose purpose is to promote preparatory initiatives particularly in the local Churches.

Also, a Cultural Commission has been established to help promote and coordinate cultural activities including exhibitions, concerts and performances, which will accompany and enrich the pilgrims’ spiritual experience.

These activities will kick off in September with an exhibition in the Vatican of three masterpieces of Spanish Renaissance artist El Greco:  The Baptism of Christ, Christ Carrying the Cross, and Christ Blessing.  This first "symbolic event" , said Archbishop Fisichella, will help visitors reflect on the of "Hope in Christ," which is the theme underlining the 2025 Jubilee, whose motto is “Pilgrims of Hope”.

Also included in the Jubilee preparatory initiatives is the traditional exhibition "100 Nativity Scenes in the Vatican", a popular annual event held in Rome during the Christmas season in which creches from across the globe are displayed.

The information and communication  work of the Dicastery will be supported by a  Communications Commission bringing together journalists from various newspapers, academics, and new media experts, while an Ecumenical Commission  will provide, not only support for inter-religious dialogue on the central theme of Hope, but will also contribute with the Dicastery to the organization of the celebrations for the 17th centenary anniversary of the historic Council of Nicaea, the first Christological Council in Church history, which also falls in 2025.

One further goal achieved over the past months has been the involvement in the Vatican’s Jubilee preparation projects of Dioceses from all around the world. The Dicastery, said Archbishop Fisichella, has already met with the 212 delegates of the Italian dioceses and the 90 representatives of Bishops' Conferences.

Publication and translation of  "Council Notebooks”

Following a  request by Pope Francis that 2023 be dedicated to the “rediscovery” of the four Constitutions of the Second Vatican Council on the occasion of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of its opening, the Dicastery has published the "Council Notebooks”, a series of 35 small volumes, on the contents of the Dei Verbum, Sacrosanctum Concilium, Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes.

The "Notebooks" have already been translated into Spanish by the Bishops' Conference of Spain under the title "Cuadernos del Concilio," and are also being translated by the Mexican, Brazilian, Czech Bishops’ Conferences and in India into English.

In view of 2024, which Pope Francis has asked to dedicate to prayer, the Dicastery is also studying the possibility of setting up a "School of Prayer," and plans to publish a series of resources titled "Notes on Prayer," aimed at encouraging  the faithful to rediscover the value of prayer sustained by the great Christian tradition.

During the press conference, the Vatican Pro-Prefect also announced that the Dicastery has selected the winner of the Competition for the official Jubilee Hymn. His name  is Maestro Francesco Meneghello, from Mantua, Italy, who is to set to music the text by Italian theologian and musicologist Pierangelo Sequeri.

One of the highlights of the conference was the presentation  of the Calendar of the Holy Year, though for the moment it only covers major jubilee events (Jubilee of young people, movements, confraternities, catechists, the world of work, schools). It will be gradually updated as the Jubilee year approaches.

Visitors will be able to ask information on the Jubilee Year, at a  Pilgrims Center - Info Point to be inaugurated on June 1  in the premises of Via della Conciliazion, 7 in front of st.Peters’ Basilica .

As from 10 May information can also be found on the Jubilee website www.iubilaeum2025.va  .  

The new portal, explained Monsignor Graham Bell, the Dicastery’s Section  undersecretar is available in 9 languages and already presents some of the most important content for learning about the Jubilee event, including  information on the Holy Door of St. Peter's and the other Roman Basilicas. News will be updated daily and, starting in September this year, pilgrims will be able to register for the Jubilee events and the pilgrimage to the Holy Door.

The  “Pilgrim Card"

From that date the Pilgrim's Zone, the personal page accessed after registering, will be active. Upon registration, after entering the required data, pilgrims will receive the “Pilgrim Card" in digital version, with a personal Qr code needed to access Jubilee events and to organize the pilgrimage to the Holy Door. The use will be intended not only for individuals, but also for groups.

The Jubilee App

Also, from September social media pages and the new Jubilee App, iubilaeum2025, be officially active and accessible. The app, which will be downloadable for iOs and Android, will allow users to access all the news already on the website, but also make it easier and faster to register for Jubilee events, with the option of receiving personalized information.

 Pope’s May prayer intention:

In his intention for May, 2023, Pope Francis prays that ecclesial movements and groups might daily rediscover their evangelizing mission.

Pope Francis is dedicating his May prayer intention to ecclesial movements and groups, which says are a “gift” and a “treasure” in the Church.

Dialogue at the service of mission

In his video-message, published each month by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, Pope Francis says, “These movements renew the Church with their capacity for dialogue at the service of her evangelizing mission.” He notes, too, that each group has its own unique charism, which allows them to demonstrate both the beauty and the novelty of the Gospel proclamation.

Each charism is different, he explains, thanks to the creativity that marks the various groups and movements. Although they seem to be speaking different languages, by understanding themselves, they are able to make themselves understood.

At the same time, the Pope warns them to avoid the temptation of turning in on themselves, by inviting them to continue to work “at the service of the Bishops and the parishes.”

Always on the move

Pope Francis encourages them to “always be on the move, responding to the impulse of the Holy Spirit to the challenges in today’s world,” while remaining “in harmony with the Church, since harmony is the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

The Holy Father concludes his message with the prayer “that ecclesial movements and groups may daily rediscover their mission, an evangelizing mission, and that they place their own charisms at the service of the world’s needs.”

Many charisms, one mission

In its press release promoting this month’s prayer intention, the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network highlights a number of ecclesial movements and lay associations spreading the Gospel throughout the world, including, Shalom, Communion and Liberation, New Horizons, the Sant’Egidio Community, and Focolare: “Many different charisms, one sole mission: proclaiming the Gospel to different places and in different ways.”

The press release explains that “Ecclesial movements are groups of people committed to an apostolate with their own specific charism, which the Holy Spirit grants for the common good of the Church. Composed mainly of members of the lay faithful, the search for a personal encounter with Christ unites them. At the same time, at the service of the Gospel, they dialogue with today’s women and men, wherever they are.”

The Pope Video is an official global initiative with the purpose of disseminating the Holy Father's monthly prayer intentions. It is carried out by the Pope's Worldwide Prayer Network (Apostleship of Prayer). Since 2016, The Pope Video has had more than 196 million views across all the Vatican’s social networks, and is translated into more than 23 languages, receiving press coverage in 114 countries. KNOWLEDGE IS HUMILITY, JUSTICE AND PEACE

Pope Francis addresses Hungary's academicians and scientists at the last public event of his Apostolic Visit, and urges them to always be humble and recall that knowledge is truth and that truth is freedom.

 Pope Francis’ final meeting in Budapest took place at the Péter Pázmány Catholic University, where he spoke to representatives of Hungarian academicians and exponents of culture.

 In his addresss, the Holy Father focused on the acquisition of knowledge, which he said “entails a constant planting of seeds that take root in the soil of reality and bear rich fruit.”

 He recalled that Romano Guardini, “a great intellectual and a man of deep faith”, claimed that there were “two ways of ‘knowing’”: One is a gentle, relational knowledge and mastery, which Guardini described as “rule by service, creation out of natural possibilities, which does not transgress set limits”, and another which he described as not inspecting but analysing.

 The machine

Pope Francis noted that, in this second form of knowledge, “materials and energy are directed to a single end: the machine”, and that as a result “a technique of controlling living people is developing.”

 "Guardini did not demonize technology," noted the Pope, "which improves life and communication and brings many advantages, but he warned of the risk that it might end up controlling, if not dominating, our lives. He foresaw the threat and left us with the question: Can life retain its living character in this system?”

 Contemporary reality

The Pope went on to note that much of what Guardini foresaw seems obvious to us today.

 “We need but think of the ecological crisis, the lack of ethical boundaries, of our tendency to concentrate on the individual, absorbed in his or her needs, greedy for gain and power, and on the consequent erosion of communal bonds, with the result that alienation and anxiety are no longer merely existential crises, but societal problems," he said.

 He went on to quote, as he has done before, the novel The Lord of the World, by Robert Hugh Benson, describing it as being “to some degree prophetic in its description of a future dominated by technology, where everything is made bland and uniform in the name of progress, and a new 'humanitarianism' is proclaimed, cancelling diversity, suppressing the distinctiveness of peoples and abolishing religion.”

Real intellect includes humility

Pope Francis went on to stress that true intellectuals are truly humble. He explained that “they feel the duty to remain open and communicative, never unbending and combative. True lovers of culture, in fact, never feel entirely satisfied; they always experience a healthy interior restlessness.”

Truth is freedom

Pope Francis’ final point to the academic and cultural world reflected on the words of Jesus, when He said: “The truth will make you free”.

The Pope noted that “Hungary has seen a succession of ideologies that imposed themselves as truth, yet failed to bestow freedom”, adding that this risk remains to this day.

“I think of the shift from communism to consumerism,” said the Pope, noting how easy it is to pass from limits imposted on thinking, to the belief that there are no limits.

Instead, said Pope Francis, "Jesus offers a way forward; He tells us that truth frees us from our fixations and our narrowness. The key to accessing this truth is a form of knowledge that is never detached from love, a knowledge that is relational, humble and open, concrete and communal, courageous and constructive."

Universities, concluded the Pope, are called to cultivate this form of relational knowledge, expressing his hopes that all universities "will always be beacons of universality and freedom, fruitful workshops of humanism, laboratories of hope.”

 Cinquante ans après sa mort, la pensée du philosophe français

   interpelle l'actualité.

En plaçant la personne au centre, 

en surmontant la diversité

 et en promouvant un ordre mondial juste

L'extraordinaire actualité de la pensée de Jacques Maritain, cinquante ans après sa mort, peut être résumée dans une question posée par le philosophe dans un discours prononcé à Toulouse devant la Communauté des Petits Frères de Jésus où il s'était retiré, après la mort de son épouse Raïssa, depuis 1960. Maritain demandait : "Que veulent d'abord les hommes ? De quoi ont-ils besoin avant tout ?", une question qui, aujourd'hui plus qu'hier, secoue nos consciences. "Ils ont besoin - poursuit-il - d'être aimés, d'être reconnus, d'être traités comme des êtres humains, de sentir respectées toutes les valeurs que chacun porte en soi (La vocation des Petits Frères de Jésus, La Locusta, 1982). Même dans la dernière période de son existence, Maritain a donc continué à reproposer la personne (chaque personne, la personne dans la concrétude de sa vie) comme point d'appui essentiel de la société, au sens civil et politique, dans une vision plus large de l'humain reconsidéré dans tous ses aspects. C'est l'idée de l'intégralité de l'homme, la vision d'un humanisme intégral, né au confluent de la recherche de la foi et de l'exercice de la raison et capable d'inspirer et de soutenir tout engagement politique réel en faveur de la transformation de la réalité.

 Aujourd'hui, cinquante ans après sa mort, cette proposition continue à provoquer et à inspirer dans les nouvelles formes que le temps historique exige. En fidélité à la pensée de Marita, l'humanisme intégral peut signifier aujourd'hui, en particulier, la capacité de réaliser concrètement ce compagnonnage dont il nous parle à travers l'image des "compagnons de route qui, par une rencontre fortuite, se trouvent réunis ici, marchant sur les routes de la terre [...] dans un bon accord humain, avec bonne humeur et solidarité cordiale" (Per una politica più umana, Morcelliana, 1979). Un humanisme intégral qui pousse aujourd'hui chacun d'entre nous à s'engager pour rendre praticable l'humanisme intraculturel, où la diversité (culturelle, sociale, religieuse, économique, civile) est un enrichissement précieux plutôt qu'un motif de peur du "pas encore connu".

 Maritain nous enseigne à nous occuper concrètement de la personne, c'est-à-dire des personnes avec leurs besoins et leurs exigences. Une attention qui a besoin d'être concrétisée chaque jour pour devenir une bonne pratique du bonum honestum.

Mais, en même temps, Maritain nous exhorte à travailler et à lutter pour le respect des droits de la personne, des droits de tout homme, comme nous le rappelle la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme de 1948 (à la rédaction de laquelle il a collaboré) et comme nous le lisons dans Les droits de l'homme et la loi naturelle, publié à New York dès 1942.

 Se référant à la personne humaine, le philosophe écrivait ainsi : "Les droits fondamentaux, tels que le droit à l'existence et à la vie, le droit à la liberté personnelle ou le droit de mener sa vie en étant maître de soi et de ses actes, responsable de ceux-ci devant Dieu et devant la loi de la civitas, - le droit de poursuivre la perfection de la vie humaine morale et rationnelle, le droit de poursuivre le bien éternel [...], le droit à l'intégrité corporelle, le droit à la liberté d'expression, le droit à la liberté d'expression, le droit à la liberté d'expression, le droit à la liberté d'expression. le droit à l'intégrité corporelle, le droit à la propriété privée des biens matériels, qui est une garantie de la liberté de la personne, le droit de se marier selon son propre choix et de fonder une famille, qui est également garantie par les libertés qui lui sont propres, le droit d'association, le respect de la dignité humaine de chaque personne (qu'elle représente ou non une valeur économique pour la société), tous ces droits s'enracinent dans la vocation de la personne, agent spirituel et libre, à l'ordre des valeurs absolues et à un destin supérieur au temps". Il s'agit d'appels décisifs, à considérer dans une perspective universelle et, pour cette raison, d'autant plus importants que Maritain est bien conscient des innombrables violations des droits qui ont lieu dans le monde. C'est pourquoi d'autres rappels maritainiens apparaissent également décisifs. Parmi les droits de la personne par rapport à l'ordre international, "les plus importants sont le droit de chaque Etat, grand ou petit, à la liberté et au respect de son autonomie, le droit à la foi jurée et à la sainteté des traités, le droit au développement pacifique (un droit qui, étant valable pour tous, exige pour être mis en oeuvre l'établissement d'une communauté internationale dotée d'un pouvoir juridique et le développement de formes fédératives d'organisation)" (I diritti dell'uomo e la legge naturale, Vita e Pensiero, 1977). Un ordre des droits malheureusement largement méconnu si l'on pense, pour donner des exemples immédiats, à la guerre en Ukraine et au Soudan, ainsi qu'aux innombrables autres conflits disséminés dans le monde, ou à la privation de droits en Afghanistan et en Iran.

 La centralité de l'axe des droits dans la pensée de Jacques Maritain, dans sa référence incontournable à la vision unitaire de la personne, peut également permettre de relire d'un point de vue particulier la multiplicité des intérêts du penseur français, allant de l'éducation à l'esthétique, de la philosophie morale à la politique, de l'épistémologie à la philosophie de la nature, sur la base d'une vision métaphysique qui relit à l'origine l'enseignement thomiste. Et cela peut aussi nous permettre de rappeler sa vie qui a su traverser de nombreux mondes, dans son amitié avec des personnalités importantes du monde de la philosophie, de la culture, de l'art, de la politique et de l'Église (pensons à son amitié avec Paul VI, entre autres), de la France aux États-Unis et à l'Italie (avec son engagement en tant qu'ambassadeur de France auprès du Saint-Siège), dans une quête philosophique libre et ouverte aux grandes questions de la vie (comme en témoignent les rencontres dans sa maison de Meudon), toujours conscient des limites de l'humain, mais aussi toujours convaincu de la grandeur de chaque personne et de l'ouverture de l'humain au divin.

The next Jubilee will be in 2025 and there is great expectation among the faithful from all over the world. Its importance is also recognized and respected by other faiths around the world.

The last Jubilee was the extraordinary one of 2015 wanted by Pope Francis. The one that will take place in 2025 will be the second with Pope Francis.

As many know, the Jubilee is a special year of grace, in which the Catholic Church offers the faithful the possibility of asking for a plenary indulgence, that is, the remission of sins for themselves or for deceased relatives.

A Jubilee usually lasts a year and a few days: it begins just before the Christian Christmas and ends the Epiphany of the following year.

The most exciting and well-known rite is certainly the opening of the Holy Door. This gate is open only during the jubilee year and the 4 main ones are the major basilicas of Rome: St. Peter, Archbasilica of St John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St Mary Major. The first to be opened is St. Peter's Basilica, the other doors are opened in the following days and remain open until the end of the Jubilee when they are once again walled up.

 

Il prossimo Giubileo sarà nel 2025 e c'è grande attesa tra i fedeli di tutto il mondo. La sua importanza è riconosciuta e rispettata anche dalle altre fedi in tutto il mondo.

L'ultimo Giubileo è stato quello straordinario del 2015 voluto da Papa Francesco. Quello che si svolgerà nel 2025 sarà quindi il secondo con Papa Francesco.

Come molti sanno il Giubileo è un anno speciale di grazia, in cui la Chiesa cattolica offre ai fedeli la possibilità di chiedere l'indulgenza plenaria, cioé la remissione dei peccati per sé stessi o per parenti defunti.

Un Giubileo solitamente dura un anno e qualche giorno: inizia poco prima del Natale Cristiano e conclude l'Epifania dell'anno successivo.

Il rito più emozionante e conosciuto è sicuramente l'apertura della Porta Santa. Questa Porta viene aperta solo durante l'anno giubilare e le 4 principali sono le basiliche maggiori di Roma: San Pietro, San Giovanni in Laterano, San Paolo fuori le mura e Santa Maria Maggiore. La prima ad essere aperta è la Basilica di San Pietro, le altre porte vengono aperte nei giorni successivi e restano aperte fino al termine del Giubileo quando tornano ad essere murate.
