In the name of the Cardinal Prefect, José Tolentino de Mendonça, and in my own name, I warmly greet those present here today and the entire World Union of Catholic Teachers. The new identity of the Dicastery, which now combines the former Congregation for Catholic Education with the Pontifical Council for Culture, makes your contribution all the more meaningful and pressing, and makes our gratitude all the more heartfelt. In fact, your presence in schools and universities is that of the yeast mentioned in the Gospel, which leavens the entire foodstuff of society, baking “the bread of sense” that every man and woman must taste so as to live. Culture is our everyday bread of sense; schools and universities are its flour. Certainly, this is not the only ingredient, but it is a necessary one.

The Dicastery expresses its gratitude especially to the members of WUCT’s Executive Committee who have come to the end of their mandate: Professor Guy Bourdeaud’hui, Professor John Lyndon and Professor Giovanni Perrone. Our cordial greetings and thanks also go to your ecclesiastical assistant, Archbishop Vincent Dollman. At the same time, the Dicastery offers its encouragement to those who, in the coming days, will be elected members of the Executive Committee, and who will receive from their predecessors a generous inheritance. Your mission is to accompany teachers and principals of schools and universities from all over the world, so that they, inspired by the Gospel, can promote the holistic development of the human person. The Dicastery is ready to support you, while, at the same time, it is happy to learn from your association, which can now boast of seventy years of experience.......
