THE UMEC-WUCT
GENERAL ASSEMBLY ELECTED THE NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The General Assembly of the World
Union of Catholic Teachers, which met in Rome from 11 to 13 November, elected
the new Executive Committee, which will be composed of the Ecclesiastical
Assistant, Msgr. Vincent Dollmann, Archbishop of Cambrai, the president, Jan de
Groof, professor at the University of Antwerp, the general secretary, Giuseppe
Desideri, AIMC national president, and the treasurer, Caroline Healy, of the
University of London.
During the meeting with the Assembly
participants, the Pope thanked the members of the Executive Committee who had
completed eight years of service (Guy Bourdeaud'hui from Belgium, Giovanni
Perrone from Italy and John Lydon from England) and wished the newly elected members
well. This is how he put it: "I express my gratitude to the members of the
outgoing President's Committee for their faithful and generous service over
many years, in the certainty that the work they have done - selflessly and with
great passion - will bear fruit in the future: work to bear fruit".
The Pope highlighted the value of
UMEC-WUCT for cooperation among teachers and for witnessing to Gospel values in
schools and universities around the world.
"Your Union aims to encourage
and motivate all these teachers so that they may be fully aware of their
important mission as educators and witnesses of the faith, individually or
within groups of colleagues. To this end you propose to be a network of
colleagues in the profession and of brothers and sisters in the faith who, in a
spirit and style of friendship, welcome, mutual knowledge and common spiritual
growth, place themselves at the service of all Catholic teachers so that they
may preserve their identity and carry out their mission. I would say that in
this task you are 'collaborators of the Pope': in fact, the mission of the
Successor of Peter is precisely that of confirming and sustaining the brethren
in the faith (cf. Lk 22:32). And so you, in the world of education, make
present the Church's service of sustaining Catholic teachers in the faith, so
that they can carry out their work and their witness to the best of their
ability, in situations that are often complex on the relational and
institutional levels......Dear brothers and sisters, I encourage you to look
forward with hope and to give new impetus to the Union of Catholic Teachers.
There is great work and an important mission awaiting you in the world of
education". ......
