HIGHER EDUCATION CONVERSATION SERIES

A series of monthly Higher Education Conversations have been in place since November 2021 on technical aspects of the Global Convention and broader higher education issues in the leadup to the Third World Higher Education Conference in May 2022. The fourth conversation will be held on 10 February from 14:00 – 15:00 over Zoom, with a focus on equity and vulnerable groups. You can find the agenda and registration details here. More about the Conference in May ·       The conference is organized as a global conversation on higher education. It aims to contribute to the guarantee of the right to education without discrimination and to the 2030 Agenda and its main purpose of leaving no one behind.   ·       WHEC2022 is arranged around 10 thematic areas and a number of sub-themes, and aims to bring together diverse voices from academia, education systems, decision-makers, civil society, youth organisations, among others.    ·       All actors in the higher education ecosystem are invited to contribute their voice, reflections, knowledge, learnings, etc., to the conference through, knowledge reports on topics of interest, video messages, consultation reports (organized by interested members), and others.  ·       As part of WHEC2022 activities, a youth involvement strategy is in place. UNESCO. INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

 International Holocaust Remembrance Day

27JANUARY

Every year around 27 January, UNESCO pays tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to counter antisemitism, racism, and other forms of intolerance that may lead to group-targeted violence. The date marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. It was officially proclaimed, in November 2005(link is external), International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations General Assembly.

The Holocaust profoundly affected countries in which Nazi crimes were perpetrated, with universal implications and consequences in many other parts of the world. Member States share a collective responsibility for addressing the residual trauma, maintaining effective remembrance policies, caring for historic sites, and promoting education, documentation and research, more than seven decades after the genocide. This responsibility entails educating about the causes, consequences and dynamics of such crimes so as to strengthen the resilience of young people against ideologies of hatred. As genocide and atrocity crimes keep occurring across several regions, and as we are witnessing a global rise of antisemitism and hate speech, this has never been so relevant.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL

"Whenever this history is questioned, whenever violence is done to the memory of the victims, the rise of anti-Semitism and hate speech is encouraged, an everyday scourge of Jewish communities around the world. More than ever, we must therefore be vigilant. It is our shared responsibility to protect the truth, and to keep alive the memory of all those who suffered under the Nazi regime; to support research and documentation that can confront the fantasies of fanatics with the reality of history; and to study and teach the Holocaust, so that education may prevent anti-Semitism and all forms of racism." —  Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

2022 COMMEMORATIONS

To mark the 77th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, UNESCO will organize a series of events. Due to restrictions put in place because of COVID-19, and to reach global audiences, the majority of events will be held online. Events will include a commemoration ceremony and a panel discussion on the legacy of Jewish artists who died during the Holocaust on 27 January 2022, in addition to an exhibition at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. UNESCO Field Offices and Regional Bureaus will also join the global commemoration of the International Day by organizing local events.

The 2022 commemorations are organized thanks to the generous support of the Permanent Delegation of Germany to UNESCO.

HOLOCAUST - NEVER BE REPEATED !

 Pope: ‘Never repeat unspeakable cruelty of Holocaust’

As the world prepares to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Thursday, Pope Francis urges families to remind younger generations about the millions of people, especially Jews, killed at the hands of the Nazi regime.

“This unspeakable cruelty must never be repeated.”

Pope Francis made that appeal at the end of the Wednesday General Audience, one day before the world dedicates a day to recalling the horrors of the Holocaust, also known as the Shoah.

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held on the date of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp on 27 January 1945.

The Pope said the world must remember the “extermination of millions of Jews, people of various nationalities and religious faiths.”

He lamented the genocide of around 6 million of Europe’s Jews, or two-thirds of the continent’s Jewish population, at the hands of the Nazi regime.

“This is a suffering people. They have suffered hunger and great cruelty, and they deserve peace.”

Teaching younger generations

Pope Francis also appealed to everyone, but especially to “educators and families, so that they might engender in younger generations the awareness of the horrors of this dark page in human history.”

“It must never be forgotten, so that we can build a future in which human dignity is never again trampled upon.”

‘So much cruelty’

Pope Francis visited the ruins of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 2016, where the Catholic priest St. Maximillian Kolbe was killed, along with 1.1 million others.

The Pope spoke no words on that occasion, but only embraced several of the camp’s survivors.

He wrote his prayer in Spanish in the Book of Honor:

“Señor ten piedad de tu pueblo. ¡Señor, perdón por tanta crueldad! Lord, have mercy on your people. Lord, forgive so much cruelty!”

Écouter avec l’oreille du cœur

Chers frères et sœurs!

L'année dernière, nous avons réfléchi à la nécessité de “venir et voir” pour découvrir la réalité et pouvoir la raconter à partir de l'expérience des événements et de la rencontre avec les personnes. En poursuivant dans cette ligne, je voudrais maintenant porter l'attention sur un autre verbe, "écouter", qui est décisif dans la grammaire de la communication et condition pour un dialogue authentique.

En effet, nous perdons la capacité d'écouter ceux qui sont en face de nous, tant dans le cours normal des relations quotidiennes que dans les débats sur des questions plus importantes de la vie civile. Parallèlement, l'écoute connaît un nouveau développement important dans le domaine de la communication et de l'information, à travers les différentes offres de podcast et de chat audio, confirmant qu’elle reste essentielle pour la communication humaine.

On a demandé à un illustre médecin, habitué à soigner les blessures de l'âme, quel était le plus grand besoin des êtres humains. Il a répondu : "Le désir illimité d'être écouté". Un désir qui reste souvent caché, mais qui interpelle tous ceux qui sont appelés à être éducateurs ou formateurs, ou qui de toute façon jouent le rôle de communicateurs : parents et enseignants, pasteurs et agents pastoraux, professionnels de l'information et ceux qui exercent un service social ou politique. ...

GLOBAL COMPACT EDUCATION - ENGAGEMENT FOR US ALL

The Congregation for Catholic Education has issued a vademecum to launch reflection and research on the Global Educational Pact, promoted by Pope Francis.

The Holy Father hopes for a new season of educational commitment involving all the components of society. For this reason, he invites everyone to implement suitable initiatives to promote and implement educational alliances and to reflect on specific aspects concerning the major educational issues of today in order to build a better world.

In this regard, the vademecum identifies seven commitments for the implementation of the Pact. We invite all of you and the institutions where you work to choose one or more themes and to carry out specific initiatives by next July. Involve the institutions in your area.

With the reflections and documents that you will send us we would like to prepare a dossier to be presented to the Holy Father on the next UMEC-WUCT Assembly in the autumn.

Attached you will find the vademecum and the documentation in various languages.

We enclose a form for you to fill in, indicating your choices, and to return by next February.

La Congrégation pour l'éducation catholique a publié un vade-mecum pour lancer la réflexion et la recherche sur le Pacte mondial pour l'éducation, promu par le pape François.

Le Saint-Père souhaite une nouvelle saison d'engagement éducatif qui implique toutes les composantes de la société. Pour cette raison, il invite chacun à mettre en œuvre des initiatives appropriées pour promouvoir et mettre en œuvre des alliances éducatives et à réfléchir sur des aspects spécifiques concernant les grandes questions éducatives d'aujourd'hui afin de construire un monde meilleur.

À cet égard, le vade-mecum identifie sept engagements pour la mise en œuvre du Pacte.

Nous vous invitons tous, ainsi que les institutions où vous travaillez, à choisir un ou plusieurs thèmes et à mener des initiatives spécifiques d'ici juillet prochain. Impliquez les institutions de votre région.

Nous aimerions utiliser le matériel que vous nous envoyez pour préparer un dossier qui sera présenté au Saint-Père lors de la prochaine Assemblée en automne.

El Santo Padre espera una nueva temporada de compromiso educativo que implique a todos los componentes de la sociedad. Por ello, invita a todos a poner en marcha iniciativas adecuadas para promover y poner en marcha alianzas educativas y a reflexionar sobre aspectos concretos relativos a las grandes cuestiones educativas de hoy para construir un mundo mejor.

En este sentido, el vademécum identifica siete compromisos para la aplicación del Pacto.

Per questo invita tutti ad attuare iniziative idonee a promuovere e realizzare alleanze educative e a riflettere su specifici aspetti riguardanti le maggiori problematiche educative odierne, per costruire un mondo migliore. 

A proposito, il vademecum individua sette impegni per la realizzazione del Patto.

Invitiamo voi tutti e le istituzioni ove operate a scegliere una o più tematiche e a realizzare specifiche iniziative, entro il prossimo luglio. Coinvolgete le istituzioni del territorio ove operate.

HECTOR RIGALDO, IN MEMORIAM

Héctor Rigaldo está muerto. Que el Señor lo reciba en sus brazos paternales y consuele a su familia. Le damos las gracias por su larga y generosa presencia en Umec, por sus pensamientos positivos, por su leal sonrisa y amistad, por su gran fe y humildad.

Héctor Rigaldo est décédé. Que le Seigneur le reçoive dans ses bras paternels et réconforte sa famille. Nous le remercions pour sa longue et généreuse présence à Umec, pour ses pensées positives, pour son sourire et son amitié fidèles, pour sa grande foi et son humilité.

Héctor Rigaldo has died. May the Lord receive him into his fatherly arms and comfort his family. We thank him for his long and generous presence in Umec, for his positive thoughts, for his loyal smile and friendship, for his great faith and humility.

Héctor Rigaldo è morto. Il Signore lo accolga tra le sue paterne braccia e dia conforto ai familiari. Lo ringraziamo per la sua lunga e generosa presenza in Umec, per i suoi pensieri positivi, per il suo leale sorriso e la sua amicizia, per la sua grande fede e umiltà.

 

In memoriam prof. Hector Rigaldo

 Con el corazón roto me enteré del fallecimiento de nuestro querido amigo, el profesor Héctor Rigaldo, residente en Argentina. Lo conocía desde hace mucho tiempo y siempre lo aprecié por su simpatía y su absoluta lealtad a UMEC-WUCT.

Se preocupó mucho por el bienestar de nuestra asociación y especialmente por sus fines, que defendió en cuerpo y alma. Quería estar presente en las reuniones tanto como fuera posible, incluso a pesar de las dificultades bancarias en Argentina o a pesar de los problemas de salud acumulados. Después de los crecientes problemas físicos de los últimos años, sin embargo, quiso testimoniar personalmente su apoyo y su presencia, incluso durante nuestro último consejo en Bruselas del 15 al 19 de diciembre de 2019, donde estuvo presente con su querida esposa desde el principio hasta y punto.

En UMEC-WUCT también fue conocido y apreciado por la publicación incansable durante décadas de sus  ‘Piensamientos positivos’, publicaciones semanales muy amables y altruistas en 3 idiomas. De esta manera, trató cada semana de sembrar palabras de esperanza en todo el mundo y ¡le estamos muy agradecidos!

Héctor, esposo ejemplar, maestro comprometido, apreciado amigo, sustentador, fiel creyente, damos gracias al Padre por haberte podido conocer y apreciar. Les agradezco en mi nombre y en el de UMEC-WUCT por haber podido conocerlo. Fue tambien ejemplar su respeto y veneración a la Virgen de Luján, patrona de Argentina, Uruguay y Paraguay.

¡Que la Virgen de Lujan lo acoja en su gran amor!

HECTOR, UN AMIGO

Querida familia del amigo Hector,

En esta ocasión triste de la muerte de Hector Rigaldo quiero reflexionar un rato sobre la persona de nuestro amigo. Siempre cuando nos encontramos en Roma fue posible de tener un dialogo mucho mas que organisador. Podiamos entrar en el alma de la persona de Hector. Gracias al hecho que también yó conoci algo de la situación educativa de la Argentina, por motivo de mis encuentros en Buenos Aires, comprendí la labor del director. Confrontando situaciones dificiles en el país, Hector ha dedicato toda su energía al bien de los educadores y de los jóvenes en las escuelas. Fue una maravilla tenerlo siempre presente en los encuentros mundiales en Roma, superando las dificultades de los viajes. Me habló mucho de ‘sus’ profesores, con un amor vivo y también una preocupación para el sufrimiento de los profesores. Me recuerdo en Hector una persona que nunca pedí nada, ni para si mismo ni para la organisación que dirigaba, pensaba solo en donarse para los demas. Soy feliz de que lo conocí y es por eso que siento tanto su ausencia. Quiero expresar my profundo pésame y mi oración en la eucaristía para que el Señor acoja este servidor fiel.
