Today, the word “service” appears a bit hackneyed, worn out by use. But it has a precise and concrete meaning in the Gospel. To serve is not a courteous expression: it means to act like Jesus, who, summing up his life in a few words, said he had come “not to be served, but to serve” (Mk 10:45). This is what the Lord said. Therefore, if we want to follow Jesus, we must follow the path he himself traced out, the path of service. Our fidelity to the Lord depends on our willingness to serve. And we know this often costs, because “it tastes like a cross”. But, as our care and availability toward others grows, we become freer inside, more like Jesus. The more we serve, the more we are aware of God’s presence. Above all, when we serve those who cannot give anything in return, the poor, embracing their difficulties and needs with tender compassion: and we in turn discover God’s love and embrace there.

After having spoken of the primacy of service, Jesus does something precisely to illustrate this. We have seen that Jesus’ actions are stronger than the words he uses. And what is that action? He takes a child and puts him in the midst of the disciples, at the center, in the most important place (cf. v. 36). In the Gospel, the child does not symbolize innocence so much as littleness. For like children, the little ones depend on others, on adults, they need to receive. Jesus embraces those children and says that those who welcome a little one, a child, welcome him (cf. v. 37). The ones who are to be served above all are: those in need of receiving who cannot give anything in return. To serve those who need to receive and cannot give anything in return. In welcoming those on the margins, the neglected, we welcome Jesus because He is there. And in the little one, in the poor person we serve, we also receive God’s tender embrace.

TEACHER VOICES FROM THE CARRIBEAN

Distance Learning and Teacher Training Strategies in the Caribbean SIDS

In response to the disruption of the Caribbean education system, UNESCO, Blackboard and the Caribbean Centre for Educational Planning (CCEP) at the University of the West Indies launched the Education response to Covid-19: Distance Learning and Teacher Training Strategies in the Caribbean SIDS  in January 2021 with the aim to train 10 000 teachers in the Caribbean SIDS in the use of online education tools, resources and interactive platforms to effectively engage students through online learning.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, distance education has been a challenge for many teachers. Reasons include poor or no connectivity, lack of access to devices and online educational resources, and the challenge of moving quickly from the traditional classroom to an online environment.

Through UNESCO's Global Education Coalition, a multi-sectoral education coalition to protect the right to education during COVID-19, this programme is made possible with financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). With the support of UNICEF Jamaica, 6000 teachers can be trained in Jamaica.

The programme builds on the experience of the 2020 pilot initiative to enhance the capacity of teacher trainers, teachers and education leaders in digital literacy and blended learning solutions through a coordinated regional approach to develop, deliver and maintain quality online learning resources.

In 2020, UNESCO and Blackboard trained 90 teachers in online skills development for distance education in Caribbean SIDS through the pilot project "Professional Development for Teachers for Blended Learning and Online Strategies".  In an intensive four-week online training course led by Blackboard, teachers acquired digital literacy competencies in basic computer skills and online tools and methods, and were trained in the blended modality, which includes face-to-face teaching.

After successful completion of the course, the teachers were certified as "master trainers". This enables them to use distance learning methods to provide quality and inclusive education to their students.  40 of these master trainers from the pilot project are leading the Distance Learning and Teacher Training Strategies in the Caribbean SIDS to strengthen professional capacity for online teaching of teachers in the Caribbean in three cohorts from June to November 2021.

The teacher training has a particular focus on methods to ensure that the most vulnerable girls, boys and adolescents are not left behind in their learning and that possible gender differences are taken into account in distance learning opportunities.

ROMANIA. EDUCATIE GLOBALA - GLOBAL EDUCATION - EDUCATION GLOBALE-

Educație globală. Cetățean global. Educator global.

 ro – it – en – fr

Prof. Adrian Podar  - Romania

World's Future in Your Actions.

Comandamento numero 9.

Global education. Global citizen.       Global educator.

Pope Francis talks about the need for a "revolution" when it comes to preventing climate change, cf. https://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/18/world/pope-francis-climate-technology-encyclical/index. html. Where does this start? With what tools? Who will take an active role in this fundamental process? ... these are key questions.

In August 2021, at the invitation of the ART Fusion Association Bucharest - https://artfusion.ro/, coordinators within a European project for teachers for their training on climate change, several teachers from all over the country participated in two training sessions about global education.

The recruitment process of the participants aimed to find teachers involved in non-formal education, who, at the end of the entire training, in the summer of 2022, will be actively involved in teaching classes on environmental education, global citizenship, climate change, which will lead when setting up "green" schools, where they are collected selectively, in harmony with the environment.

The first part of the training, August 2021, took place in the city of Sinaia, in the mountains, in central Romania, where during the practical workshops, we participants became familiar with the objectives and resources of the course and we formulated our own objectives, accordingly with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The training activities consisted of seminars, presentations, discussions and debates, role plays and completion of questionnaires. The most important topics were sustainable lifestyle, carbon footprint, responsible consumer, quality requirements, environmental impact and its measurement, all under the motto World’s Future in Your Actions.

A group has been created that aims to make changes, with proposals at individual and global level, at school and in society. The 10 commandments of Pope Francis - https://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/18/world/pope-10-commandments-climate-change/index.html - are and remain a guide to the attitude towards resemblance and compared to the environment. Commandment number 9. Educate yourself is the beginning of a journey that will be reflected in us and the students we form on what we call the future.

L'éducation globale. Citoyen global.
