CATHOLIC TEACHERS IN THE WORLD

en - fr - es
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CATHOLIC TEACHERS AROUND THE WORLD HELD IN ROMANIA

- by Giovanni Perrone

The international conference on Catholic education around the world begins today. The theme is "Being Catholic Teachers in Different Realities Around the World: Challenges and Hopes."

It is organized by UMEC-WUCT and the Diocese of Oradea. Bishops and teachers from various dioceses, nations, and continents are participating.

The Eparch of Oradea, Bishop Virgil Bercea, co-organizer of the event, and the Vicar, Pope Paul Popa, supporters of the Union's presence and development in Eastern countries, emphasize the importance of the meeting, an opportunity for discussion and planning for all. "We have accepted Pope Leo's invitation to 'draw new maps of hope,'" they tell us. "The presence of Catholic teachers around the world, in fact, is a sign of hope for everyone, Christians and non-Christians alike. Being a Catholic teacher means committing oneself to the values of the Gospel in daily school and social life, respecting diverse realities and cultures. "Go and preach throughout the world," Jesus urged at the moment of his ascension. "Do not be afraid: I am with you."

UMEC-WUCT President Professor Jan De Groof agrees: "The Catholic teacher is called to be an active citizen, to give life to scholastic knowledge, to make it a path of peace, solidarity, and dialogue; to pay attention to the most vulnerable and marginalized and to be a fruitful point of reference for students, families, and the complex realities in which they work."

De Groof is returning from the recent meeting of Catholic teachers in Africa on the educational challenges of the vast continent, organized together with the Archbishop of Kigali (Rwanda), Cardinal Antoine Kambanda, and the "Institut Pacte Éducatif Africain (IPEA). In Africa, the UMEC-WUCT has also been committed for years, together with UNESCO, to promoting education and solidarity initiatives.

The Oradea meeting will feature presentations by Cardinal Parolin, the Archbishop of Cambrai, Monsignor Dollmann (Ecclesiastical Assistant to the Union), representatives of local churches, the Romanian Ministry of Education, various Catholic lay universities and schools, and education delegates from numerous dioceses.

The working days also include participation in Byzantine liturgical events, meetings with Oradea schools, and visits to the city's monuments. The conference will conclude on the 27th.

ROMANIA. EDUCATIE GLOBALA - GLOBAL EDUCATION - EDUCATION GLOBALE-

Educație globală. Cetățean global. Educator global.

 ro – it – en – fr

Prof. Adrian Podar  - Romania

World's Future in Your Actions.

Comandamento numero 9.

Global education. Global citizen.       Global educator.

Pope Francis talks about the need for a "revolution" when it comes to preventing climate change, cf. https://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/18/world/pope-francis-climate-technology-encyclical/index. html. Where does this start? With what tools? Who will take an active role in this fundamental process? ... these are key questions.

In August 2021, at the invitation of the ART Fusion Association Bucharest - https://artfusion.ro/, coordinators within a European project for teachers for their training on climate change, several teachers from all over the country participated in two training sessions about global education.

The recruitment process of the participants aimed to find teachers involved in non-formal education, who, at the end of the entire training, in the summer of 2022, will be actively involved in teaching classes on environmental education, global citizenship, climate change, which will lead when setting up "green" schools, where they are collected selectively, in harmony with the environment.

The first part of the training, August 2021, took place in the city of Sinaia, in the mountains, in central Romania, where during the practical workshops, we participants became familiar with the objectives and resources of the course and we formulated our own objectives, accordingly with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The training activities consisted of seminars, presentations, discussions and debates, role plays and completion of questionnaires. The most important topics were sustainable lifestyle, carbon footprint, responsible consumer, quality requirements, environmental impact and its measurement, all under the motto World’s Future in Your Actions.

A group has been created that aims to make changes, with proposals at individual and global level, at school and in society. The 10 commandments of Pope Francis - https://edition.cnn.com/2015/06/18/world/pope-10-commandments-climate-change/index.html - are and remain a guide to the attitude towards resemblance and compared to the environment. Commandment number 9. Educate yourself is the beginning of a journey that will be reflected in us and the students we form on what we call the future.

L'éducation globale. Citoyen global.

ROMANIA - FESTIVITATEA ULTIMULUI CLOPOTEL

OUR FATHER

[ AR  - EN  - ES  - FR  - IT  - PL  - PT ]

Pope Francis: " -.... Each time we say “Our Father”, we state that the word Father cannot stand on its own, apart from Our. United in Jesus’ prayer, we are also united to his experience of love and intercession, which leads us to say: “My Father and your Father, my God and your God” (cf. Jn 20:17). We are invited to make my become our, and our to become a prayer. Help us, Father, to take our brother or sister’s lives seriously, to make their history our history. Help us, Father, not to judge our brother or sister for their actions and their limitations, but to welcome them before all else as your son or daughter. Help us to overcome the temptation to act like the elder brother, who was so concerned with himself that he forgot the gift of the other person (cf. Lk 15:25-32).
To you, Father, who art in heaven, a heaven that embraces all and in which you make the sun rise on the good and the evil, on the just and the unjust (cf. Mt 5:45), we implore the peace and harmony that here on earth we have failed to preserve. We ask this through the intercession of all those brothers and sisters in faith who dwell with you in heaven after having believed, loved and suffered greatly, even in our own days, simply for the fact that they were Christians.
Together with them, we wish to hallow your name, placing it at the heart of all we do. May your name, Lord, and not ours, be the one that moves and awakens in us the exercise of charity. How many times, in prayer, do we limit ourselves to asking for gifts and listing requests, forgetting that the first thing we should do is praise your name, adore you, and then go on to acknowledge, in the brother or sister whom you have placed at our side, a living image of you. In the midst of all those passing things in which we are so caught up, help us, Father, to seek what truly lasts: your presence and that of our brother or sister.
We wait in expectation for your kingdom to come. We ask for it and we long for it, because we see that the workings of this world do not favour it, organized as they are around money, personal interests and power. Sunken as we are in an increasingly frenetic consumerism that entices us with glittering but fleeting realities, we ask you to help us, Father, to believe in what we pray for: to give up the comfortable security of power, the deceptive allure of worldliness, the vain presumption of our own self-sufficiency, the hypocrisy of cultivating appearances. In this way, we will not lose sight of that Kingdom to which you summon us.
Thy will be done, not our will. “God’s will is that all be saved” (SAINT JOHN CASSIAN, Spiritual Conferences, IX, 20). We need to broaden our horizons, Father, lest we place our own limits on your merciful, salvific will that wishes to embrace everyone. Help us, Father, by sending to us, as at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit, source of courage and joy, to impel us to preach the good news of the Gospel beyond the confines of the communities to which we belong, our languages, our cultures and our nations.
Each day we need him, our daily bread. He is the bread of life (cf. Jn 6:35.48) that makes us realize that we are beloved sons and daughters, and makes us feel no longer isolated and orphaned. He is the bread of service, broken to serve us, and asking us in turn to serve one another (cf. Jn 13:14). Father, as you give us our daily bread, strengthen us to reach out and serve our brothers and sisters. And as we ask you for our daily bread, we ask also for the bread of memory, the grace to nurture the shared roots of our Christian identity, so indispensable in an age when humanity, and the young in particular, tend to feel rootless amid the uncertainties of life, and incapable of building their lives on a solid foundation. The bread that we ask begins with a seed, slowly grows into an ear of grain, is then harvested and is finally brought to our table. May it inspire us to be patient cultivators of communion, tireless in sowing seeds of unity, encouraging goodness, working constantly at the side of our brothers and sisters. Without suspicion or reserve, without pressuring or demanding uniformity, in the fraternal joy of a reconciled diversity.
The bread we ask today is also the bread of which so many people today are lacking, while a few have more than enough. The Our Father is a prayer that leaves us troubled and crying out in protest against the famine of love in our time, against the individualism and indifference that profane your name, Father. Help us to hunger to give freely of ourselves. Remind us, whenever we pray, that life is not about keeping ourselves comfortable but about letting ourselves be broken; not about accumulating but about sharing; not about eating to our heart’s content but about feeding others. Prosperity is only prosperity if it embraces everyone.
Each time we pray, we ask that our trespasses, our debts, be forgiven. This takes courage, for it means that we must forgive the trespasses of others, the debts that others have incurred in our regard. We need to find the strength to forgive our brother or sister from the heart (cf. Mt 18:35), even as you, Father, forgive our trespasses: to leave the past behind us and, together, to embrace the present. Help us, Father, not to yield to fear, not to see openness as a threat, to find the strength to forgive each other and move on, and the courage not to settle for a quiet life but to keep seeking, with transparency and sincerity, the face of our brothers and sisters.
And when the evil that lurks at the doorway of our heart (cf. Gen 4:7) makes us want to close in on ourselves; when we feel more strongly the temptation to turn our back on others, help us again, Father, for the essence of sin is withdrawal from you and from our neighbour. Help us to recognize in every one of our brothers and sisters a source of support on our common journey to you. Inspire in us the courage to say together: Our Father. Amen..... "

CYBERBULLYING .... WORK IN PROGRESS !!!

Cyberbullying, work in progress!!
Some data about Romania

Cyberbullying, work in progress!!... Yes! According to statistics, it is a reality in the process of constant change and a phenomenon that is constantly amplifying. Here's some information about the situation in the United States[1].

It is noted that the phenomenon of cyberbullying has doubled over a period of 9 years. The average for 2007-2016 is 27.9%. Statistical data was collected by the Center for Cyberbullying Research among high school and high school students on a representative sample. Of the respondents, only 16% agreed that they would behave violently on the internet, with behaviors that could fit into the definition of cyberbullying. It must be: intentionally, repeatedly, targeting the injuries of the other, and occurring through electronic devices[2]. Cyberbullying is related to low self-esteem, suicidal intentions, anger, frustration and a variety of other emotional or psychological problems, we discover from the same sources.
Globally, cyberbullying is more nuanced. A study conducted between 2011 and 2018 shows that there are two poles of this reality: India - reporting 37% and Russia - 1%. From this study, we find that in Romania - data are only for 2018 - parents reported cyberbullying in 11%, which is below the global average, but above Hungary, for example, with a 10 % and below Italy or Poland by 12%.
According to the studies, cyberbullying has always doubled between the periods of time spent studying it: 2002-2007 and 2007-2018. What is worrying, according to statistics, is that little has been done to diminish the phenomenon. Moreover, the manners in which the phenomenon manifested have diversified. The latest situation is identity theft, as is the case of Facebook, which is trying to stop this phenomenon by different platforms. One of these is presented to us as proposed in Italy[3]. The platform is called Fermiamo il bullismo and was developed in collaboration with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The platform contains downloadable pdfs and indications for those who are victims of violence, for parents and teachers who are bullied, but also for parents and teachers accused of harassment.

Continuous amplification of the phenomenon of cyberbullying. Years 2004-2018.

Cyberbullying undermines the full realization of the UN's Sustainable Development Objective 4 - we read on the UNESCO website - on the quality of education. Traditional and online aggression are closely linked, both forbidding equal access to education and acting against safety, non-violent and inclusive learning environments for all children and adolescents.
The need to involve the national education sector is clear. Evidence from a study shows that 62% of the digital users interviewed did not know or were unsure of how much they could find help when they were assaulted by electronic devices. Based on the evidence available, participants gathered in London to develop the new campaign to combat cyberbullying agreed that the focus should be on children and young people. However, there is also a major opportunity to increase the commitment and support of adults, including parents, teachers, school administrators, youth leaders, coaches, health professionals and others.
The call to a global campaign to tackle this issue was first announced in the International Symposium School Violence and Harassment. It was co-organized by UNESCO and the Institute for the Prevention of School Violence at Ewha Womens University in Seoul in January 2017, where the UNESCO Report on the Global Situation of School Violence and Harassment was published. The Cyberbullying Global Campaign, supported by No Bully, wishes to engage in creative collaborations, decentralized actions, and provide adaptable messages and materials, as well as provide clear guidance to help change transformation. The participants who participated in the London meeting came from around the world and included social representatives and other industry representatives, researchers, civil society partners, young people, representatives of the Ministry of Education and UNESCO. This initiative could be closely linked to the UNESCO program on combating school violence and harassment as part of efforts to protect the health and well-being of young people against online aggression. The campaign is under development.
Romania's policy to manage cyberbullying or aggression in the virtual environment is uncertain. The site politiaromană.ro[4] talks about this and makes recommendations[5]. The reality is, as we find out in the press, a sad one. Romania has gradually become the country with the most frequent acts of aggression in the virtual environment[6]. The survey dates back to 2011. The helpline sigur.info reported 218 cyberbullying acts, out of a total of 650; exactly one-third. We are in 2017 – said the IlikeIT show presenter back then – at school, we would rather sing and draw instead of learning the right behavior in front of the TV or computer[7]. Cyberbullying is a major problem favored by a weak legislative framework, comments Iulia-Laura Dobre, Elena Enăchescu[8]. There is no cyberbullying legislation in Romania, but in the New Penal Code, from February 1, 2014, harassment has a wider meaning (unlike the old code, which mentioned only sexual harassment), cyberbullying as harassment and punishment as such. The Law on Harassment is part of Chapter VI ("Offenses against Freedom of Persons") of the New Penal Code.

  Percentages of cyberbullying in Romania.

According to statistics, by gender, the victims of cyberbullying are 16.60% boys and 25.10% girls. 70% of children and young people were at one time or another of their lives victims of aggression in the virtual context. 37% experienced it very often, 20% - daily. The phenomenon occurred either on the computer or on the mobile phone.
Society, microclimate - family - and macro-climate - as a whole - adapt to the digital world by promoting face-to-face communication. Parents are helpful when encouraging children to give up digital devices in social situations and interact with their peers through play[9]. To increase trust in the educational institution, students should be perceived as educational partners[10].
Violence in the virtual environment can be prevented and diminished by democratizing education. This happens through parents' participation in school life[11]. School is invited to open up to the community and its needs by increasing its visibility and transparency of pedagogical processes for its beneficiaries. We therefore propose an extension of school-family collaboration, since cyberbullying is a reflection of the aggressive way of networking in society[12].
At an international level, UNESCO has taken several steps[13]. Implementation of international policies at local level can lead to training for both teachers and students. As a school, how do we admire this phenomenon? We consider it appropriate to develop, for example, an optional integrated school subject, covering relevant topics in this field.
Instead of a conclusion, we intend to promote two ideas[14]. The first is an educational project titled "BLOCKaggression!". It ran from the 9 October to the 9 December 2018 and was addressed to primary, lower and upper secondary school teachers. In order to reduce and combat the phenomenon of cyberbullying, the Net Hour team provides teachers with a resource pack containing both a series of videos that address this topic and plans for 3 lessons that can be implemented in class with students. The campaign ended in December 9, 2018, and teachers were invited to follow the procedure outlined in the initiative's guidelines to receive certificates in an exclusively electronic format attesting their involvement. More information about the initiative can be found at www.oradenet.ro/block-agresivitatii, and the registration of volunteers is available at www.oradenet.ro/fii-voluntar.

The second proposal is the #NoHateredOntheNet, launched by the same the Net Hour. This is an extension that can be installed in Chrome on any computer. Once downloaded, it installs easily with the role of detecting aggressive or injurious words on any website accessed with the Google Chrome web browser, including social networking chats, and overwriting negative words with educational, respect and tolerance.
An important feature of the #NoHateredOntheNet is that when children encounter overwritten words or phrases, they will be redirected to the oradenet.ro website where, on a page dedicated to combating cyberbullying, they will find important information about the way they can react and combat the harmful effects of this phenomenon. These include: caution about providing pictures and personal data; avoiding replies to aggressors, which will be perceived as an encouragement to continue bullying; the announcement of parents or teachers, if aggression occurs in school.
