On December 10, 2021 at 10:00
pm, Asia time, the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia hosted a virtual
tour of places where Christmas celebrations have been traditionally observed.
Dr. Probo, Vice Rector for Cooperation gave the
welcome/opening remarks.
Ms. Angela Merici led the singing with stationary dancing to kick off the
sharings. She had a brief video presentation of her visits in Germany where she
experienced the joyous festivities at Christmas. She invited Ms. Leonie Schulz
from Westphalian University ( Westfalische Hochchule) to relate and describe
German Christian traditions. She belongs to the Journalism and Public Relations
Department.
She shared the German family tradition at Christmas: the preparation and
lighting of Advent wreath (Adventskranz) candles. Candles are lit on Sundays of
December. On December 6, the family starts cleaning of shoes for Nikolaus to
fill these with chocolates, nuts, and prepare a glass of milk and some sweets
for Nikolaus. They visit Christmas markets; bake and decorate Christmas cookies
(weihnachtsplatzchen); buy and decorate Christmas tree; and go ice skating.
They also hold kriskringle or wichteln ( secret Santa). On December 24, for the
Holy Night ( Heiligaband) they enjoy a Christmas dinner with potato salad,
frankfurter sausages, roasted duck with dumplings and red cabbage. For dessert,
they enjoy bratapiel ( custard and nuts).
On December 25-26, the family watches television, visits relatives and
prepares much food; after meals, they hold quiz-games. The webinar ended with a
German song. Indeed, very animating and laden with cultural practices as
observed in World’s
places.
