SCOTLAND :Professional Learning Opportunities in Religious Education

The School of Education is delighted to offer two professional learning opportunities in Religious Education in 2017/18 (see below for details). Both courses carry 20 Masters level credits. They can be taken as options on some of the existing Masters programmes or as stand-alone courses. The courses offer a mix of theory with opportunities to reflect on practice, encouraging participants to engage with primary sources and contemporary policy documents.

Regarding structure, we propose a blended model of teaching with some Saturday sessions scheduled alongside online activities. Further details re dates etc. will be posted soon.

GLASGOW - RELIGIOUS EDUCATION IN THE CATHOLIC TRADITION - New book by Leonardo Franchi

 Shared Mission: Religious Education in the Catholic Tradition                                                                                

Abstract: 

Catholic schools exist in a state of uncertainty between their double identity as Church and civic institutions. Political pressure to conform to the prevailing cultural climate can be a source of tension between Catholic school leaders and the educational establishment. 

The source of this tension often lies in the degree of ‘hostility’ shown towards religious ideas more broadly. 

A recent report in the United Kingdom on the place of religion in public life, while reflecting much of the prevailing secular ways of thinking, recognised that religious beliefs have an important role to play in society. 

This welcome commitment to religious freedom can be aligned to recent developments in Catholic educational thought towards the need for intercultural dialogue in Catholic schools. This move is not without its conceptual challenges: there remain important questions to be addressed regarding the interplay between intercultural dialogue and the mission to evangelise.

AUSTRALIA - FAITH FORMATION and RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Attached a copy of  Vision and Focus Areas document along with our Canberra Archbishop’s address at a national teacher CSYMA Conference given in 2014 (by Archbishop Christopher Prowse). The program focuses on teacher formation and the development of a four phase student model of curriculum formation in Catholic schools. We have realised over here in Australia the significant amount of work to do in the area of teacher Catholic formation.
