A wise man opens
the Church to the future.
Pope Benedict XVI
leaves his post at a moment when the Church is in search of a clear and
inspiring future.
Especially in
Western Europe, the growing secularization
has made it difficult for the Church to find its place in society.
Definitely certain
happenings of the last years have had an influence on the health of the
Pontiff. Pope Ratzinger has listened carefully to history,
he has reflected publically and guided many in the theological reflection.
Most interestingly he has brought the focus
of the Church on Jesus of Nazareth. His books have had a great impact on the
christians and far beyond them. His encyclicals will be read long time after,
his appeals for a better World, in terms of economy, ecology, collaboration
between religions and ideologies will continue to inspire intellectuals and
religious leaders.
If I can share a
personal encounter with him: it was to my great surprise that I was granted a
personal encounter after having simply made a suggestion that I would like to
share some things with him. Two things have impressed me then: his profound
knowledge of the reality of the church and his intense listening and sharing of opinions about the
church of today in western Europe. In his
letter for Lent this year his focus is on Faith and Love as complimentary
elements in the life of a Christian. This shows how he has always tried to
combine Reason and Faith as two indispensable lifegiving aspects of every human being.
A great thinker
leaves his central post to live in retirement, there he will be a strengthening
presence through his prayer and study. We
can only be grateful for the gift of his
presence in the Church and in the World.

Exit paus Benedictus XVI…
Voor iedereen was de korte, krachtige boodschap van paus
Benedictus XVI over zijn nederige terug treden een mededeling die niets aan de
verbeelding over liet en ook niet voor interpretatie vatbaar was.
Na de eerste schok, direct vergezeld van een aantal
prangende vraagtekens over de toekomst, bleef er toch vooral respect voor de
pauselijke moed en niet minder voor de –veronderstelde- nuchtere, rustige maar
spitse zelfinschatting.
Quasikenners beleven nu gloriedagen als ze met gissen en
veelal missen een aantal al dan niet exacte ‘interessante’ conclusies over dit
onverwachte gebeuren formuleren.
Is het eigenlijk niet beter als gelovigen bij de simpele
feiten te blijven en te trachten met veel gezond verstand en vooral vertrouwen
de situatie te volgen?
Sinds april 2005 werd onze kerk geleid door een onbetwist
intelligente roerganger, een man die het meer moest hebben van zijn stille
aantrekkingskracht en spitse redeneringen, een intelligente ietwat stille
strijder die tegelijk moest fungeren als een hoge boom die noodzakelijk
bijzonder veel (storm)wind moest opvangen. Wie zijn wij dat wij –onze moderne
tijd getrouw- onmiddellijk aan ’t evalueren slaan?
Niet doen. Het dient nergens toe en bovendien: ook nu
geldt dat de beste stuurlui aan de wal staan.
Wij danken deze grote mens die zijn hoge maar o zo
moeilijk ambt nooit zocht. Onze paus werd, nolens volens, voor een aantal
Sisyphus-crisismomenten geplaatst en heeft deze vanuit zijn diep geloof,
spiritualiteit, kennis en kunde, scherpzinnig maar toch blijvend nederig
proberen te beantwoorden.
Paus Benedictus XVI: oprecht bedankt voor dit
‘onmogelijke’ pontificaat!
Met u én met uw opvolger blijven we de toekomst, ook voor
onze wereldorganisatie van katholieke onderwijsmensen, met vertrouwen tegemoet
zien.
