Service-learning, an opportunity for Catholic education

Service learning integrates service and community engagement into the learning experience of students and provides credit-bearing courses to do so. Through service learning, students and faculty may deepen their understanding of concepts discussed in the classroom and assess their relevance for the real world, typically within a social justice lens. The concept of service learning did not emerge from Catholic educational institutions, but it is aligned with their identity and has been encouraged by Pope Francis. We briefly discuss service learning in a recent two-part article here and here and we are considering putting together a special issue of a journal on the topic. If you are interested, please contact us. One of the key organizations supporting service-learning in Catholic education is CLAYSS, including through the Uniservitate project. CLAYSS has several interesting events coming up, including one in a few days for which registration is still open and free on their website.

 L'apprentissage par le service, une opportunité pour l'éducation catholique

 L'apprentissage par le service intègre le service et l'engagement communautaire dans l'expérience d'apprentissage des étudiants et propose des cours pour ce faire. Grâce à l'apprentissage par le service, les étudiants et les professeurs peuvent approfondir leur compréhension des concepts discutés en classe et évaluer leur pertinence pour le monde réel, généralement dans une optique de justice sociale. Le concept d'apprentissage par le service n'a pas émergé des établissements d'enseignement catholiques, mais il est aligné avec leur identité et a été encouragé par le pape François. Nous discutons brièvement de l'apprentissage par le service dans un récent article en deux parties ici et ici et nous envisageons de créer un numéro spécial d'une revue sur le sujet.  El aprendizaje y servicio solidario, una oportunidad para la educación católica

 El aprendizaje y servicio solidario integra el servicio y la participación de la comunidad en la experiencia de aprendizaje de los estudiantes y proporciona cursos para hacerlo. A través del aprendizaje y servicio solidario, los estudiantes y el profesorado pueden profundizar su comprensión de los conceptos discutidos en el las clases y evaluar su relevancia para el mundo real, típicamente dentro de una perspectiva de justicia social. El concepto del aprendizaje y servicio solidario no surgió de las instituciones educativas católicas, pero está alineado con su identidad y ha sido fomentado por el Papa Francisco. Discutimos brevemente el aprendizaje y servicio solidario en un artículo reciente de dos partes aquí y aquí y estamos considerando preparar un número especial de una revista sobre el tema. En Castel Gandolfo más de trescientos participantes de escuelas y universidades de más de cien naciones.Cristianos, judíos y musulmanes; rectores universitarios, docentes, pero también estudiantes, para intercambiar ideas, intercambiar experiencias, crear redes, planificar el futuro, para una universidad y una escuela al servicio de la persona, de cada persona.

UMEC-WUCT participó en el Congreso y presentó los objetivos de la Unión.

CONCLUSION OF THE FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS

In Castel Gandolfo more than three hundred participants of schools and universities of more than one hundred nations. Christians, Jews and Muslims; university rectors, teachers, but also students, to exchange ideas, exchange experiences, create networks, plan for the future, for a university and a school at the service of the person, of each person.

IL QUARTO CONGRESSO MONDIALE DI SCHOLAS 

A Castel Gandolfo oltre trecento partecipanti provenienti da scuole e università di oltre cento nazioni. Cristiani, ebrei e musulmani; rettori universitari,  docenti, ma anche studenti, per confrontarsi, scambiare esperienze, creare reti, progettare il futuro, per un'università e una scuola al servizio della persona, di ogni persona. Anche l'UMEC-WUCT ha partecipato, illustrando le finalità dell'Unione.

 È una “vocazione specifica per l’educazione informale” quella portata avanti dalla Scholas Occurrentes, il progetto educativo che Papa Francesco appoggiava quando era Cardinale e arcivescovo di Buenos Aires e che ora si è trasformata in fondazione di diritto pontificio. E a definire la loro vocazione è stato l’arcivescovo Vincenzo Zani, segretario della Congregazione per l’Educazione Cattolica.

L’occasione è la presentazione del IV Congresso Internazionale delle Cattedre Scholas, dal 27 al 29 giugno a Castel Gandolfo. Il tema del Congresso è “Università e scuola. Verso un rilancio dell’università in uscita”.

“Siamo contenti di far notare – ha detto l’arcivescovo Zani - che la Congregazione dell’Educazione Cattolica ha accompagnato in la Fondazione di Scholas Occurrentes, questa esperienza che è nata a Buenos Aires dall’allora cardinale Jorge Mario Bergoglio”.

Ha proseguito l’arcivescovo: “Da cinque anni abbiamo colto l’originalità di questa esperienza, perché sottolinea soprattutto l’educazione informale, che si può sviluppare fuori dalle aule scolastiche, fuori dalle aule universitarie. Noi, che come Congregazione abbiamo seguito le scuole cattoliche di tutto il mondo, eravamo attenti al tema della educazione informale, ma da quando abbiamo conosciuto Scholas Occurrentes abbiamo visto che qui c’è una vocazione specifica. Si va oltre i mezzi classici, l’aula si apre, gli strumenti sono più belli e interessanti”.

Il Congresso, promosso dalla Pontificia Fondazione Scholas Occurrentes, nata a Buenos Aires per mano dell’allora arcivescovo Jorge Mario Bergoglio, si propone di utilizzare lo strumento dell’educazione al fine di promuovere cambiamenti sociali. Durante la tre giorni, docenti di 75 Università provenienti da 30 Paesi di tutto il mondo si confronteranno su innovazione educativa, sviluppo integrale sostenibile, dialogo interculturale e interreligioso.

Le cattedre Scholas approfondiscono un tema particolare ogni anno, e quest’anno il tema è quello dei rifugiati.

“Il primo congresso – ha raccontato Italo Fiorin – aveva come tema ‘Università e scuola: un muro o un ponte?’. L’università non è una cittadella dove si rinchiude un sapere. L’università è invitata ad essere risorsa, la cattedra è quella del magistero di Papa Francesco”.

‘Educating for Encounter and Solidarity’ (EIS)

 of the LUMSA, Rome.

               The perennial tasks of education are to convey to the young generations the cultural heritage of the community they belong to and to provide them with the appropriate skills to play a full part in economic and social life on completion of formal education. Today, however, these tasks need to be rethought in the light of the challenges that the 21st century society poses to education. We can summarize the challenges as follows: competitive individualism; multicultural society and the globalization of indifference. To help the human person to become more human (J. Maritain) and to fully realize his potential, we must change the logic of the debate, replacing the paradigm of individualistic utilitarianism with the paradigm of service. The pedagogical proposal of Service Learning seems particularly interesting in this respect.

               What does it mean to educate in the cultural and social climate in which we currently live?

               I like the definition of a French philosopher of the twentieth century, a great friend of Pope Paul VI: ‘Education means helping the human person to become more human’ (J. Maritain). To educate, therefore, means recognizing this profound human vocation, to which we cannot respond answer alone because no one is self-sufficient, least of all the little child who needs someone accompanying him in his growth process, helping him to recognize the meaning of life. Educationally, the verb ‘to accompany’ is very important, both delicate and strong at the same time.

               This is a task that demands great respect, great care, great wisdom. The difference between those who use authority to direct the lives of others and those who use it to help others become as autonomous as possible is summed up as the difference between being authoritarian and being authoritative.

               The authoritarian person demands undue obedience arising from of fear of sanction; the authoritative person fosters individual freedom and is listened to because he is credible,speaking meaningfully to our heart.

               Moreover, the meaning of word authority ('augere' – to grow, replenish, donate abundantly) is about fostering the growth, not the subordination, of others. ......

 La pédagogie du service learning

C’est une étroite inter connexion entre l’apprentissage et le service à la communauté. Apprendre génère et soutient la capacité de se rendre utile à soi même et aux autres, et le service rendu génère l’apprentissage. Ce sont les idées portées par le Séminaire international mis en avant par la Congrégation pour l’Education Catholique et par l’Université LUMSA, en collaboration avec le Ministère de l’éducation de l’Italie, au siège prestigieux de l’Académie Pontificale des Sciences au Vatican.

Le Séminaire a favorisé la connaissance de la pédagogie proposée par le service learning, une approche qui oriente les étudiants vers le service à la communauté, et ce fut l’occasion de présenter l’Ecole de Haute Formation « Eduquer à la rencontre et à la solidarité » soutenue par la LUMSA et par la Congrégation EC, dirigée par le professeur Italo Fiorin. ....

Let us learn to better serve

 The pedagogy of service learning

   It is a narrow inter-connection between learning and the service to the community.  To learn generates and sustains the capacity to make oneself useful to oneself and to others, and the service rendered generates the learning. These are the ideas delivered by the International Seminary , put forward by the Congregation for Catholic Education and by the University LUMSA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Italy, at the prestigious See of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences at the Vatican.
   The Seminary has favoured the knowledge of the proposed pedagogy through service learning, an approach which leads the students towards service to the community, and it was the occasion/opportunity to present the School of Higher Education ‘’To Educate at the meeting and at the solidarity’’, supported by LUMSA  and the EC Congregation, led by Professor Italo Fiorin........

LA PEDAGOGIA DEL SERVICE LEARNING

“Fare del bene fa bene!” C’è una stretta interconnessione tra l’apprendimento e il servizio alla comunità. L’apprendere genera e sostiene la capacità di rendersi utili a se stessi e agli altri e il servizio genera apprendimento. Queste le idee portanti del Convegno internazionale promosso dalla Congregazione per l’Educazione Cattolica e dalla LUMSA, in collaborazione con il Ministero dell’Istruzione, Università e Ricerca, nella  prestigiosa sede della Pontificia Accademia delle Scienze in Vaticano. Nell’occasione è stata espressa viva gratitudine al cardinale Grocholewski che, proprio in quel giorno, concludeva il suo servizio di Prefetto della Congregazione e ha voluto salutare i partecipanti.

Il Convegno ha favorito la conoscenza della proposta pedagogica del Service Learning, un approccio che orienta gli studenti verso il servizio alla comunità, ed è stato anche occasione per presentare la Scuola di Alta Formazione “Educare all’incontro e alla solidarietà”, promossa dalla LUMSA e dalla Congregazione EC,  diretta dal professor Italo Fiorin. L’intensa giornata di lavoro ha favorito un ampio dibattito sulle problematiche connesse al Service Learning grazie alla partecipazione di esperti provenienti da varie parti del mondo (chiesa, università, scuole, associazioni professionali, ...).

APRENDER A SERVIR MEJOR 

LA PEDAGOGIA DEL SERVICIO DE APRENDIZAJE 

Hacer bein hace bien! Existe una estrecha relación entre el aprendizaje y el servicio a la comunidad. El aprendizaje genera y apoya la capacidad de ser útiles a sí mismos ya los demás, y el servicio realizado genera aprendizaje. Estas son las ideas de la Conferencia Internacional organizada por la Congregación para la Educación Católica y la LUMSA, en colaboración con el Ministerio italiano de Educación,  en la prestigiosa sede de la Academia Pontificia de las Ciencias en el Vaticano.

El Convenio ha fomentado el conocimiento de la pedagogía del Servicio de Aprendizaje (Service Learning), un enfoque que dirige a los estudiantes con el servicio comunitario, y fue también la ocasión para presentar la Escuela de Alta Formación "Educar al encuentro y la solidaridad", promovido por la LUMSA y la Congregación EC y dirigido por el profesor Italo Fiorin. La intensa jornada de trabajo ha promovido un amplio debate sobre las cuestiones relacionadas con el Service Learning (servicio de aprendizaje) con la participación de expertos de diferentes partes del mundo (iglesias, universidades, colegios, asociaciones profesionales, organismos ..). .....
