L’ARTE DEL PRENDERSI CURA

L'ART DE PRENDRE SOIN

THE ART OF TAKING CARE

EL ARTE DE CUIDAR

-          Italo Fiorin

-

THE ART OF TAKING CARE

The President of the Italian Republic, Mattarella, in Trento, named the European capital of volunteering, said: « Volunteering expresses a vision of the world. That of the indivisibility of the human condition. The famous I care, it concerns me , written by Don Milani and Martin Luther King. A vision that places the person in the foreground, the integrality of their life, their full right to be an active part of the community."

Italy boasts a large, widespread presence of silent and concrete volunteering, people of all ages and social conditions who care for others, for the environment, for institutions. This is the great resource of our country, without which we would be poorer, especially in terms of humanity.

Who is the 'volunteer'? Anyone who does something good for others, not out of obligation, does it for free, finding the reward in what they do. We could say, paradoxically, that the volunteer takes care, first of all, of himself, not in utilitarian or narcissistic terms, not out of ambition, not out of calculation or profit, not to have, but to be more ( ser mais , said P. Freire).

If volunteering is an act of free choice, it is however a precious asset that must be cultivated. And it starts immediately, with the children in the family, with the students at school. There is no school subject called ' culture of care' , but this is the most important teaching, which does not require resources, is not certified by grades, but makes the difference.

And, as President Mattarella always reminds us: «the "culture of care" must also translate into "care of the Republic" and "care of Europe". Solidarity generates hope. And solidarity and hope are closely connected with the idea of peace, which has been seriously betrayed. The actions of the volunteers speak to us of peace. The world also changes starting from the small steps that fill our daily lives.

The cure is not made by exceptional events, but by daily and generous commitment. This is a responsibility that concerns everyone."

THE SCHOOL I WANT - L'ÉCOLE QUE JE VEUX

L'ÉCOLE QUE JE VEUX

 - par Italo Fiorin

A quoi sert principalement l'école ?

 THE SCHOOL I WANT    -

- by Italo Fiorin

What is school primarily for? There are many possible answers to this question. School is the place of encounter with culture, where the transmission of a precious heritage to the younger generations takes place (traditio means transmission). However, school is also the place of preparation for the future, an invitation to the adventure of knowledge (ad ventura means turning towards the things that are not yet there, towards the unexplored). And, between the past (tradition) and the future (adventure), school is the place of encounter with others, of relationships, of the discovery of not being alone in the world, nor the centre of the world, of not being absolute monarchs (ab solutus means without ties), but connected, interdependent, part of a community. One certainly goes to school to learn knowledge and develop skills, but not as monads isolated from each other, but as persons, that is, as beings in relationship. As an African proverb says, 'we are people through other people'.

In other words, one goes to school to learn and to learn to learn, but also to learn to live together, peacefully, constructively, in solidarity with others.

So, we go to school to become ourselves (which means learning to discover our talents and take care of them) and, at the same time, we go to school to learn to do this together with others, made of the same human dough as us, not strangers, but brothers and sisters, with whom we share the same home and the same destiny.

The three words of the French Revolution express this idea of citizenship: liberty, equality, fraternity. We go to school not only to learn their meaning, but above all their necessary relationship, because they are not words 'ab solute', but related, not independent but interdependent. Indeed, freedom, without rules, tends to destroy equality; equality, if imposed, tends to destroy freedom; fraternity can neither be decreed nor imposed, but is necessary for both and must be encouraged.

What happens, in fact, without a consciously cultivated fraternity, without a political will for fraternity, translated into an education in fraternity, in dialogue, in the discovery of reciprocity and mutual enrichment as values?

EDUCATING TODAY AND TOMORROW - EDUCARE OGGI E DOMANI

A Passion that is Renewed
Una passione che si rinnova

Prof. dr. Italo Fiorin
Director of the Higher Education School
‘Educating for Encounter and Solidarity’ (EIS)
 of the LUMSA, Rome.

The perennial tasks of education are to convey to the young generations the cultural heritage of the community they belong to and to provide them with the appropriate skills to play a full part in economic and social life on completion of formal education. Today, however, these tasks need to be rethought in the light of the challenges that the 21st century society poses to education. We can summarize the challenges as follows: competitive individualism; multicultural society and the globalization of indifference. To help the human person to become more human (J. Maritain) and to fully realize his potential, we must change the logic of the debate, replacing the paradigm of individualistic utilitarianism with the paradigm of service. The pedagogical proposal of Service Learning seems particularly interesting in this respect.
What does it mean to educate in the cultural and social climate in which we currently live?
I like the definition of a French philosopher of the twentieth century, a great friend of Pope Paul VI: ‘Education means helping the human person to become more human’ (J. Maritain). To educate, therefore, means recognizing this profound human vocation, to which we cannot respond answer alone because no one is self-sufficient, least of all the little child who needs someone accompanying him in his growth process, helping him to recognize the meaning of life. Educationally, the verb ‘to accompany’ is very important, both delicate and strong at the same time.
This is a task that demands great respect, great care, great wisdom. The difference between those who use authority to direct the lives of others and those who use it to help others become as autonomous as possible is summed up as the difference between being authoritarian and being authoritative.
The authoritarian person demands undue obedience arising from of fear of sanction; the authoritative person fosters individual freedom and is listened to because he is credible, speaking meaningfully to our heart.

Moreover, the meaning of word authority ('augere' – to grow, replenish, donate abundantly) is about fostering the growth, not the subordination, of others. ......
