UNESCO EDUCATION @UNGA

This year’s UN General Assembly is celebrating its 75th anniversary under the theme ‘The future we want, the United Nations we need: reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism – confronting COVID-19 through effective multilateral action’.

UNESCO Education is organizing a virtual high level side event to focus on the progress made by the Global Education Coalition in the past 6 months.

The event will share with countries measures and best practices in responding to immediate challenges of school closures and re-openings, including concrete examples on how the Global Education Coalition members are engaging in supporting country needs.

The event will take place on 25 September from 10 – 11.30 am (New York time). You can register here.

BROADBAND COMMISSION REPORT ON SCHOOL CONNECTIVITY

A new report published by the Broadband Commission looks into school connectivity and introduces a methodology and framework for mapping and connecting primary and secondary schools to the Internet. The report is the result of a working group co-chaired by the ITU, UNESCO and UNICEF and aims to help governments, their partners and interested stakeholders to develop more holistic school connectivity plans.

The report highlights the efforts and approach used by Giga and UNESCO’s e-schools Initiative; two global initiatives aimed at connecting schools to the Internet and at turning schools into entry points for bringing connectivity to entire communities. More info in this news article

EDUCATION INITIATIVES

·        Video on new EQUALS hub

Worldwide, 2 billion women are offline. They are 4 times less likely than men to know how to use advanced digital technologies. In today’s society, women and men, girls and boys must have equal access to tech skills development and career opportunities. To face this challenge, the EQUALS Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age has just launched the EQUALS Digital Skills Hub, a one-stop shop on projects, resources and good practices to advance digital skills for girls and women. The Hub was created by UNESCO, with the support of the Government of Germany, as a contribution to the EQUALS Global Partnership.
