Faith, mission and challenge in Catholic education: the selected works of Gerald Grace

 This important and timely collection of the selected works of Professor Gerald Grace is part of the prestigious World Library of Educationalists series, published by Routledge. The purpose of this influential Library is to provide distinguished figures in the field of educational studies with an international platform for the further dissemination of their original thinking. The series affords academics in education an opportunity to bring together in a single volume the ‘highlights’ of their life’s work in a structured and accessible way. The opportunity of contributing a contemporary reflection on their ideas encourages the development of a critically reflective edge to one’s own scholarly output. How fortunate is the student of education, and indeed serving academic, whose university library has such a worthy collection on its shelves!

      The inclusion of the work of Professor Grace in this highly prized series signals the esteem in which his contribution to educational studies, and Catholic education in particular, is held. As Francis Campbell, Vice-Chancellor of St. Mary’s University, London, notes in the Foreword: ‘This book marks Professor Grace’s outstanding contribution to the Catholic Church’s education mission as teacher, university lecturer and professor … .’

      Professor Grace has made it his mission to propose ‘Catholic education’ as a field of study worthy of its rightful place in the academy and not just an appendix to the wider life of the Catholic Church. In so doing, he has been without doubt one of the key, if not the key, figure in the landscape of Catholic education in the United Kingdom and the wider English-speaking world for over two decades.

      Professor Grace’s work aims to bring to life the mission of Catholic education in the contemporary Church. The Second Vatican Council gave a new impetus to the work of Catholic education in that it energised those who wished to reappraise how to live as a Christian in a plural society. Although education was not a major theme of the Council, the post-Conciliar period saw significant and far-reaching developments in the Holy See’s established teaching on education. The work of the (Sacred) Congregation for Catholic Education provides the fertile terrain on which Professor Grace and other distinguished scholars (we think here, for example, of Graham Rossiter and John Sullivan) have consistently sought inspiration for their attempts to investigate the relevant subsets of the field of Catholic education. For Professor Grace, this includes but is not restricted to the following areas: Catholic school leadership, the concept of spiritual capital and what makes an effective Catholic school.

         The volume brings together some of the most influential of Professor Grace’s pieces, grouped neatly under six broad themes: mission, spirituality and spiritual capital (Part 1); the preferential option for the poor (Part 2); faith-based schools, religion and academe (Part 3); concepts of educational leadership and concepts of educational ‘effectiveness’ in Catholic schooling (part 4); mission integrity (Part 5) and Catholic values, Catholic curriculum and education policy (Part 6). Each section has a number of articles/chapters which explore the themes from different perspectives. A most pleasing aspect of the book is found in the wealth of endnotes which offer clarifications and direction for deeper study of issues raised in the body of the text. There is truly something for everyone here!

          As noted above, the World Library series allows each selected author to write an introductory essay. This intellectual autobiography (so to speak) gives context and shape to the body of work which follows. Professor Grace’s contribution here is more than simply an introduction to the volume and a summary of his thinking. It is, rather, a critical and nuanced overview of the principal challenges facing scholars in the field of Catholic education today. What this means will now be examined by selecting chapters which bring to the fore some key themes of Professor Grace’s work and hence can serve as the ‘highlights’ of the book.....

DEVELOPING RESEARCH IN CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Location: Heythrop College

Research into Catholic Education continues to steadily grow both globally and within the UK and the Republic of Ireland. This two-day conference will focus on how we can further encourage and support research into Catholic Education. A key aim is to stimulate and foster the work of researchers who are exploring different aspects of Catholic education. In addition to many leading voices, there will be workshops and seminars devoted to the practical issues of researching and disseminating research within the field of Catholic Education Studies.

Keynote speakers include Dr Ros Stuart-Buttle (Liverpool Hope University), Dr Ann Casson (Canterbury Christchurch University) and Dr Sandra Cullen (Dublin City University ).

This conference is being hosted by the Heythrop Institute for Religion and Society, and organised by the Network for Researchers in Catholic Education.

This conference will provide an exceptional opportunity to explore a range of contemporary perspectives in Catholic education. It will provide a forum for advocates of Catholic education to engage with those currently researching in this increasingly important field of studies.

LES ADOLESCENTS ET LES RESEAUX SOCIAUX

       

 Les  avancées  technologiques  de  ces  dernières  années  ont  accéléré  le  développement  des  réseaux  sociaux et favorisé son expansion sur toute l’étendue de la planète. Un réseau social doit s’entendre comme un réseau qui permet à de nombreuses personnes de communiquer à travers internet, exemple : WhatsApp, Facebook,  Twitter,  Instagram,  Snapchat  etc.  De manière générale, les adolescents sont de plus en plus présents  sur  les  réseaux  sociaux,  et  les  jeunes  de  moins  de  16  ans  plus  particulièrement,  ils  adorent  la dynamique  des  réseaux  sociaux.  Au  vu  des  avantages  mais  aussi  des  inconvénients  liés  à  l’utilisation  des réseaux sociaux pour ces jeunes, la question s’est posé de savoir s’il faut interdire l’accès des réseaux sociaux aux jeunes de moins de 16 ans ?

       D’une part, les avantages des réseaux sociaux sont nombreux, c’est ce qui attire les jeunes de moins de 16 ans. La possibilité de communiquer est en tête de liste des effets positifs des réseaux sociaux. En effet, ils leurs permettent de rester en contact à tout m oment et de communiquer entre eux, ce peu importe la distance qui les sépare ; mais aussi de se créer une véritable  popularité  (traduit  par  le  nombre  de « likes »  ou    « j’aime »  obtenus)  et  une reconnaissance  auprès  de  leurs  amis  ou  non  au travers  de  publications  de  photos  et  de  contenus (faire  étal  de  leurs  talents  d’orateurs,  musiciens, sportifs, citoyens, créateurs de mode etc.). Tout cela crée un véritable sentiment d’appartenance à une communauté de personnes. Ensuite, à travers les réseaux sociaux, ils  peuvent s’informer de ce qui se passe à travers le monde grâce aux vidéos qu’ils reçoivent ou grâce au « bouche à oreilles » (informations circulant d’un utilisateur à un autre) sur ces réseaux.

      D’autre part, les jeunes de moins de 16 ans sont les plus affectés par les dérives des réseaux sociaux    car plus  fragiles  et  sensibles.  En  effet,  les  informations (audio,  vidéos,  textes) relayées  sur  les  réseaux sociaux ne  sont  pas  toujours  positives,  mais  parfois  infâmes.

     L’absence  de  contrôle des  informations transmises  sur les réseaux sociaux favorisent la pullulation des images et  vidéos  à  caractère  obscène  qui  peuvent  heurter  la sensibilité de ces jeunes. S’il est vrai que la plupart des adultes et même adolescents d’un certain âge ne sont véritablement  pas  choqués  par  certaines  images,  la donne  est  différente  pour  les  plus  jeunes  qui  se  trouvent  dans  la  phase  délicate  de  puberté.  

      En  outre  le harcèlement  dont ils peuvent  être  victimes, les réseaux sociaux c’est de l’argent et du temps. Pour avoir un forfait internet permettant d’utiliser ces réseaux, il faut dépenser de l’argent ; or quand on sait que ces jeunes ne sont pas pour la plupart autonomes, trouver continuellement les fonds pour se « connecter » devient une équation difficile pour eux. 

     L’addiction à ces réseaux chez les jeunes de cette tranche d’âge est fréquente, parce qu’ils ne savent pas « où, quand et comment ? » les utiliser. Leur utilisation est faite de manière abusive, par exemple, un jeune peut facilement passer près de 16 heures/jour (24 heures) sur son téléphone de nuit et de jour, ce qui est nocif à la longue pour sa santé.

BLAS IN AFRICA au Symposium Calasanctien

Du 26 au 30 Juin, s’est tenu à la salle Mgr Jean ZOA de la paroisse de la Cité Verte le  jubilé  des 400 ans de la création de l’ordre des écoles Pies fondé par St  Joseph  de  CALASANZ  et  concomitamment  la  célébration  des  250  ans  de canonisation de  St  Joseph de  CALASANZ,  avec pour  thème  « La  pertinence  du rêve de Calasanz en Afrique centrale ».    L’idée était de  réunir un public divers venu de tous les pays d’Afrique centrale afin de partager et d’échanger autour  de la vision de St Joseph de CALASANZ.  

Assemblée Générale mensuelle des Volontaires

L’assemblé général des volontaires de BLAS IN AFRICA tenu le 05 Juillet fut très particulière en ce sens qu’au regard du calendrier d’activités, il s’agissait de la dernière assemblée générale des volontaires de l’année 2016/2017. Ce fut ainsi l’occasion pour BLAS IN AFRICA et ses volontaires de faire le bilan de l’année écoulée et de préparer les perspectives pour celle à venir.

BLAS  IN  AFRICA  remercie  ses  volontaires  à  l’occasion  de  la  clôture  des activités du volontariat pour l’année scolaires 2016/2017 Comme il est de coutume, BLAS IN AFRICA à une fois de plus cette année tenu à remercier ses volontaires pour leur engagement et leur travail tout au long de l’année scolaire 2016/2017. Pour la circonstance, c’est le restaurant La Flèche  qui  a  servi  de  cadre  pour  l’organisation  de  cet  événement.  Il  s’agissait pour BLAS IN AFRICA à travers ce choix de partager avec ses volontaires un repas « d’au revoir »   dans une atmosphère de convivialité. Cette cérémonie qui s’est  tenu  le  15  Juillet  2017  était  donc  un  moment  de  communion  et d’échange  entre  les  volontaires  et  leur  structure  d’accueil,  mais  aussi l’occasion  de  remettre  des  attestations  aux  volontaires  qui  se  sont démarqués au cours de l’année par leur abnégation et leur ardeur au travail.

ON THE WORLD DAY 
OF PRAYER FOR CREATION

             The story of creation presents us with a panoramic view of the world. Scripture reveals that, “in the beginning”, God intended humanity to cooperate in the preservation and protection of the natural environment. At first, as we read in Genesis, “no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up – for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground” (2:5). The earth was entrusted to us as a sublime gift and legacy, for which all of us share responsibility until, “in the end”, all things in heaven and on earth will be restored in Christ (cf. Eph 1:10). Our human dignity and welfare are deeply connected to our care for the whole of creation.

However, “in the meantime”, the history of the world presents a very different context. It reveals a morally decaying scenario where our attitude and behaviour towards creation obscures our calling as God’s co-operators. Our propensity to interrupt the world’s delicate and balanced ecosystems, our insatiable desire to manipulate and control the planet’s limited resources, and our greed for limitless profit in markets – all these have alienated us from the original purpose of creation. We no longer respect nature as a shared gift; instead, we regard it as a private possession. We no longer associate with nature in order to sustain it; instead, we lord over it to support our own constructs.

The consequences of this alternative worldview are tragic and lasting. The human environment and the natural environment are deteriorating together, and this deterioration of the planet weighs upon the most vulnerable of its people. The impact of climate change affects, first and foremost, those who live in poverty in every corner of the globe. Our obligation to use the earth’s goods responsibly implies the recognition of and respect for all people and all living creatures. The urgent call and challenge to care for creation are an invitation for all of humanity to work towards sustainable and integral development.

Therefore, united by the same concern for God’s creation and acknowledging the earth as a shared good, we fervently invite all people of goodwill to dedicate a time of prayer for the environment on 1 September.  On this occasion, we wish to offer thanks to the loving Creator for the noble gift of creation and to pledge commitment to its care and preservation for the sake of future generations. After all, we know that we labour in vain if the Lord is not by our side (cf. Ps 126-127), if prayer is not at the centre of our reflection and celebration. Indeed, an objective of our prayer is to change the way we perceive the world in order to change the way we relate to the world. The goal of our promise is to be courageous in embracing greater simplicity and solidarity in our lives.

We urgently appeal to those in positions of social and economic, as well as political and cultural, responsibility to hear the cry of the earth and to attend to the needs of the marginalized, but above all to respond to the plea of millions and support the consensus of the world for the healing of our wounded creation. We are convinced that there can be no sincere and enduring resolution to the challenge of the ecological crisis and climate change unless the response is concerted and collective, unless the responsibility is shared and accountable, unless we give priority to solidarity and service.

UNESCO. DEFIS ET RESPONSABILITES POUR UNE PLANETE EN TRANSITION

Conférence Mondiale des Humanités 

L’UNESCO à travers le programme MOST (Management of Social Transformation Programme), le Conseil international de la philosophie et des sciences humaines (CIPSH) et "Liège Ensemble", ont organisé la Conférence Mondiale des Humanités qui a eu lieu à Liège (Belgique) du 6 au 12 août 2017.

Axée sur le thème "Défis et Responsabilités pour une planète en transition", la conférence avait pour but la refondation des sciences humaines, basée sur une approche polycentrique. En fait, face aux changements globaux des derniers années, il faut réexaminer la portée et le rôle des sciences humaines dans la société contemporaine et affirmer la pertinence de celles-ci pour la vie quotidienne, dans tous ses aspects : politique, social et culturel.

S.E. Mgr Francesco Follo a participé à cet événement, en proposant une réflexion sur l’unité du savoir et de l’être humain. Il a insisté sur la nécessité de retrouver les racines communes entre l’unité du savoir et de l’être humain à travers l’éducation.

En outre, Mgr Jean-Pierre Delville, évêque du diocèse de Liège, a participé à cette Conférence, en faisant une intervention sur le sujet de l’écologie dans sa totalité, en lien avec l’Encyclique Laudato Si de Sa Sainteté Pape François. 

Mgr Francesco Follo a participé à la célébration de la messe à la cathédrale de Liège le 6 août 2017. Au cours de son homélie il a souligné le lien entre foi et raison. Dans le droit fil de ce qui a été affirmé par Jean Paul II, "la foi est mature quand elle devient culture" ; seulement la foi qui est pleinement accueillie et entièrement pensée devient culture.

“Welcoming, protecting, promoting and
integrating migrants and refugees”

 Dear brothers and sisters!

“You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:34).

Throughout the first years of my pontificate, I have repeatedly expressed my particular concern for the lamentable situation of many migrants and refugees fleeing from war, persecution, natural disasters and poverty.  This situation is undoubtedly a “sign of the times” which I have tried to interpret, with the help of the Holy Spirit, ever since my visit to Lampedusa on 8 July 2013.  When I instituted the new Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, I wanted a particular section – under my personal direction for the time being – to express the Church’s concern for migrants, displaced people, refugees and victims of human trafficking.

Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age (Matthew 25:35-43).  The Lord entrusts to the Church’s motherly love every person forced to leave their homeland in search of a better future. ......

a los emigrantes y refugiados”

 Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

«El emigrante que reside entre vosotros será para vosotros como el indígena: lo amarás como a ti mismo, porque emigrantes fuisteis en Egipto. Yo soy el Señor vuestro Dios» (Lv 19,34).

Durante mis primeros años de pontificado he manifestado en repetidas ocasiones cuánto me preocupa la triste situación de tantos emigrantes y refugiados que huyen de las guerras, de las persecuciones, de los desastres naturales y de la pobreza. Se trata indudablemente de un «signo de los tiempos» que, desde mi visita a Lampedusa el 8 de julio de 2013, he intentado leer invocando la luz del Espíritu Santo. Cuando instituí el nuevo Dicasterio para el Servicio del Desarrollo Humano Integral, quise que una sección especial —dirigida temporalmente por mí— fuera como una expresión de la solicitud de la Iglesia hacia los emigrantes, los desplazados, los refugiados y las víctimas de la trata.

Cada forastero que llama a nuestra puerta es una ocasión de encuentro con Jesucristo, .........

 Chers frères et sœurs,

« L’immigré qui réside avec vous sera parmi vous comme un compatriote, et tu l’aimeras comme toi-même, car vous-mêmes avez été immigrés au pays d’Égypte. Je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu » (Lv 19, 34).

Durant les premières années de mon pontificat, j’ai exprimé à maintes reprises une préoccupation spéciale concernant la triste situation de nombreux migrants et réfugiés qui fuient les guerres, les persécutions, les catastrophes naturelles et la pauvreté. Il s’agit sans doute d’un ‘‘signe des temps’’ que j’ai essayé de lire, en invoquant la lumière de l’Esprit Saint depuis ma visite à Lampedusa le 8 juillet 2013. En créant le nouveau Dicastère pour le Service du Développement humain intégral, j’ai voulu qu’une section spéciale, placée ad tempus sous mon autorité directe, exprime la sollicitude de l’Église envers les migrants, les personnes déplacées, les réfugiés et les victimes de la traite.

Tout immigré qui frappe à notre porte est une occasion de rencontre avec Jésus Christ, .......

Liebe Brüder und Schwestern!

»Der Fremde, der sich bei euch aufhält, soll euch wie ein Einheimischer gelten und du sollst ihn lieben wie dich selbst; denn ihr seid selbst Fremde in Ägypten gewesen. Ich bin der Herr, euer Gott« (Lev 19,34).

Während der ersten Jahre meines Pontifikats habe ich wiederholt meiner besonderen Sorge um die traurige Situation so vieler Migranten und Flüchtlinge Ausdruck verliehen, die von Kriegen, Verfolgungen, Naturkatastrophen und der Armut fliehen. Es handelt sich ohne Zweifel um ein „Zeichen der Zeit“, das ich zu entziffern versucht habe, wofür ich seit meinem Besuch in Lampedusa am 8. Juli 2013 das Licht des Heiligen Geistes erfleht habe. Bei der Errichtung des neuen Dikasteriums für den Dienst zugunsten der ganzheitlichen Entwicklung des Menschen wollte ich, dass eine besondere Abteilung, die zeitweise meiner unmittelbaren Leitung unterstellt sein sollte, die Fürsorge der Kirche für die Migranten, die Evakuierten, die Flüchtlinge und die Opfer des Menschenhandels zum Ausdruck bringe.

Jeder Fremde, der an unsere Tür klopft, gibt uns eine Gelegenheit zur Begegnung mit Jesus Christus, .......

Cari fratelli e sorelle!

«Il forestiero dimorante fra voi lo tratterete come colui che è nato fra voi; tu l’amerai come te stesso perché anche voi siete stati forestieri in terra d’Egitto. Io sono il Signore, vostro Dio» (Lv 19,34).

Durante i miei primi anni di pontificato ho ripetutamente espresso speciale preoccupazione per la triste situazione di tanti migranti e rifugiati che fuggono dalle guerre, dalle persecuzioni, dai disastri naturali e dalla povertà. Si tratta indubbiamente di un “segno dei tempi” che ho cercato di leggere, invocando la luce dello Spirito Santo sin dalla mia visita a Lampedusa l’8 luglio 2013. Nell’istituire il nuovo Dicastero per il Servizio dello Sviluppo Umano Integrale, ho voluto che una sezione speciale, posta ad tempus sotto la mia diretta guida, esprimesse la sollecitudine della Chiesa verso i migranti, gli sfollati, i rifugiati e le vittime della tratta.

Ogni forestiero che bussa alla nostra porta è un’occasione di incontro con Gesù Cristo, ....

       En 20 años más, cuando los niños que nacieron durante este año hayan completado su educación formal, el mundo será radicalmente distinto al que conocemos en la actualidad. Esto nos enfrenta como sociedad a la siguiente pregunta: ¿estamos preparando adecuadamente a nuestros niños y jóvenes para afrontar desafíos futuros aún desconocidos? La Educación debe dar un giro radical desde la memorización de contenidos hacia el desarrollo de las Habilidades para el siglo XXI y una profunda atención sobre cómo aprendemos. Esperamos que su traducción al español, realizada por Fundación Chile, y su lectura pueda alimentar la reflexión en torno a este tema a todo nivel: en la escuela, en la política pública y, por qué no, también en los hogares y las conversaciones cotidianas.       Educación en cuatro dimensiones viene a apoyar a las instituciones y a los ministerios que estamos impulsando procesos de reflexión y diálogo en torno al currículum nacional, de modo de promover su calidad y pertinencia para preparar a nuestros y nuestras estudiantes con las herramientas –conocimientos, habilidades, actitudes y metaaprendizajes- requeridas para su desarrollo integral y realización en el siglo XXI.
